Skills Building Clinic-Understanding Pace
Sunday July 15, 2018 8:30 AM
Browns Summit, NC (just north of Greensboro)

Distance plus pace equals time! If you have ever looked at your map and wondered when that turn should be coming up, this clinic is for you.

8:30 registration

8:45 map work: riders will be given a map with multiple marked checkpoints. You will then measure the distances between checkpoints.

9:15: Mounted work begins by calculating your horse’s natural pace over a marked distance. As each horse finishes that exercise, riders will head out in a staggered start on the trail. You may ride solo, in pairs, or in small groups as desired. At each checkpoint, write down your elapsed time and find out how close you were to the ideal time. Adjust accordingly for the next section. Each section is short enough to turn around and ride it again, or complete the whole route, take a break, and go around again.

12:00: bring a pot-luck lunch to share over Q & A.

This trail is wooded and barefoot friendly, although deer flies are abundant. There are no facilities. In addition to a pot-luck lunch, bring water for your horses, a stopwatch, pen, and lawn chair. We will have snacks and water for humans available.

Helmets required when mounted; proof of negative Coggins required at registration.

Note: this is a public riding trail. Non-trec riders may be present, and we may need to share the trail.

Location: Bryan Park North
7790 Doggett Rd
Browns Summit, NC 27214 (Map)

RSVP to organizer: Paula Nelson, [email protected]. 336/312-3303

Donations of $40 to TREC-USA encouraged

Sunday August 26, 2018 8:00 AM

TREC-USA Members – Join us for 3 days of trail riding in the beautiful VA mountains! Enjoy cool temperatures, wild ponies and miles of scenic views with experienced TREC members. Practice planning a route, reading your map, identifying topographic features, and packing for all day rides. We will be based out of Rocky Hollow Horse Camp. We highly recommend that horses have shoes or boots all around-the trails are rocky. We plan shorter rides for Friday and Sunday, and a long all day ride Saturday.

Please RSVP to the organizer so we know who is coming and for meal planning, and make reservations directly with the campground. This will be a great opportunity to use your map skills to enjoy new terrain with experienced riders!
