At our Awards Reception last week, we proudly recognized a member of the Gov Cup team for her extraordinary work.
At just 22 years old and fresh out of college, Sydney Bates joined the Gov Cup team as a Wildlife Biologist right smack in the middle of the 2024 tournament season. She jumped in without complaint, taking on every task and hurdle with enthusiasm and grit. It was a challenging time for staff, with shifting professional responsibilities and, sadly, tragic personal losses. Although she was brand new to the job, Sydney helped carry the team through all of it.
Working with captains - especially the saltier ones - after a slow day of fishing can be a daunting task for some. Not for Sydney. She approaches dockside interviews with tact and professionalism, as well as a healthy measure of personality and humor. She can disarm even the toughest characters, a trait that has served the Series well over the last three years.
Sydney’s remarkably driven and has already spearheaded several pivotal projects, including the launch of the Gov Cup’s online store and a new annual report to showcase data collected during dockside interviews. She manages all sponsor engagement and communications, sources great gear for Gov Cup merch and boat bags, and handles much of the live reporting via the Gov Cup’s mobile app.
Most importantly, Sydney is a fierce friend and colleague. She’s unafraid to share an opinion. She’ll stand up for herself and others when it’s needed. And she’s just fun to be around. She’s frank and self-deprecating, yet sweet and confident. She’ll proudly show you 20 photos of her labrador Riggs and then look at any picture you want to share of your own dog. She’ll spend an eternity cuddling a dockside baby and then listen to every detail of a kid’s first fish. She’ll excitedly assemble a perfectly curated gift basket and jump for joy at the site of a good cookie. And, perhaps unfortunately, she’ll have you adopting phrases like “that’s fire” or “that’s foul” without you even knowing it. Sydney becomes family fast, and she is undoubtedly a crucial member of the Series family.
