Team USA Builds World Championship Experience in Guiyang Ahead of LA28 Qualification Cycle

GUIYANG, China — Team USA concluded the 2026 UIPM Pentathlon World Championships with six athletes competing in the individual qualification rounds and U.S. teams taking part in the Men’s, Women’s and Mixed Relays.

The World Championships, held August 24–30 at Huaxi Lake Park in Guiyang, featured 188 athletes — 112 men and 76 women — representing more than 70 countries, bringing together many of the world’s top modern pentathletes for the sport’s premier annual competition. For the United States, the championships provided another important opportunity to compete at the highest international level as the program looks toward 2027 and the beginning of the qualification period for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

While no U.S. athlete advanced from the individual qualification rounds to the semifinals, Team USA produced several standout performances across the disciplines and gained valuable experience that can be carried into a critical 2027 season.

Evans Leads U.S. Men in Qualification

Tyler Evans recorded the highest individual score among the American men, totaling 1,511 points to finish 20th in Qualification Group C. Evans' strongest result came in Swimming, where his 55.34-second performance ranked fourth in the group and earned 324 points. He also produced an 11:11.28 Laser Run, the 11th-best mark in the group, for 629 points.

Reigning U.S. National Champion Temirkhan Sabdenbek competed alongside Evans in Group C and finished 22nd with 1,488 points. Sabdenbek delivered one of Team USA's top Obstacle performances of the championships, completing the course in 24.25 seconds, good for sixth in the group and 373 points. He added a 56.90 swim and an 11:31.89 Laser Run.

Michael Arish*ta represented the United States in Qualification Group B, finishing 23rd with 1,454 points. Arish*ta scored 200 points in Fencing, completed Obstacle in 31.48 seconds and Swimming in 59.39 before closing his competition with an 11:41.80 Laser Run.

The combined performances placed the U.S. men 15th in the World Championships team standings with 4,453 points.

Gonzalez Earns Bronze as Team USA Places Six Athletes in Pan American Championships Finals

LIMA, Peru — Madison Gonzalez captured the women’s bronze medal to lead Team USA at the 2026 Pan American Championships, held July 17–20 in Lima, Peru.

The championships brought together 54 men and 44 women and carried significance beyond the continental titles. The event also served as the competition through which countries earned quota places for the 2027 Pan American Games, a direct qualification opportunity for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.

Team USA advanced the maximum four athletes per gender from qualification, placed six athletes in the finals and concluded the competition with one medal.

Qualification Round

The championship began July 17 with athletes divided into two qualification groups. The top 18 from each group were eligible to advance, although each country was limited to four semifinalists per gender.

The U.S. women opened with a particularly strong performance in Group B, sweeping the first three positions.

Corinne Thompson won the group with 1,212 points. She placed second in fencing with 250 points and recorded the group’s highest laser-run score with 440 points.

Courtney Middelkoop followed in second with 1,195 points, highlighted by a third-place obstacle performance of 46.04 seconds. Yu Hannah Kim completed the American sweep in third with 1,144 points after placing fourth in obstacle and second in swimming.

Cassandra Steptoe gave the United States a fourth top 11 result in Group B, finishing 11th with 1,083 points. Her 435-point laser run ranked second in the group.

In Group A, Phaelen French led the Americans with a balanced fourth-place performance worth 1,141 points. She placed fifth in fencing and sixth in both obstacle and laser run.

Madison Gonzalez finished eighth with 1,008 points despite receiving no obstacle points. Gonzalez responded by producing the fastest swim in the group at 1:02.28 and the second-highest laser-run score.

Ingrid Mayer also finished inside the top 18, placing 14th with 862 points after recording the group’s third-best laser-run score. Mary Zoldak placed 20th with 728 points.

With only four athletes per country permitted to continue, French, Gonzalez, Thompson and Middelkoop were selected to represent the United States in the women’s semifinals.

Sabdenbek, Voronina Claim Senior Titles at 2026 US National Championships

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The 2026 USA Pentathlon Multisport National Championships brought the largest domestic field in recent years to Charlotte, North Carolina, on June 27, showcasing athletes across youth, junior, senior and masters divisions.

The championship field featured athletes across youth, junior, senior and masters divisions, with several standout performances highlighting the depth of the competition.

In the Senior Men’s division, Temirkhan Sabdenbek captured the national title with a total score of 1,594. Sabdenbek, the 2025 Junior National Champion, earned the first Senior Men’s national title of his career with a strong all-around performance that included the top laser run time in the division. Luke Filar, the 2025 U19 National Champion, finished second with 1,549 points, while Tristen Bell rounded out the podium in third with 1,546.

On the women’s side, Kseniya Voronina claimed the first U.S. title of her career, winning the Senior Women’s division with 1,434 points. Voronina led the field in fencing and swimming and held off a strong podium that included 2024 U.S. National Champion Phaelen French, who finished second with 1,405 points, and 2025 U.S. National Champion Madison Gonzalez, who placed third with 1,395.

Filar continued his strong day by winning both the Junior Men and U19 Men divisions, while Voronina also added the Junior Women title to her Senior Women victory. Roslyn Densmore won the U19 Women division, leading a young field of rising athletes.

The youth divisions also featured several strong performances. Jeremiah Bales won the U17 Men title, Allison Christensen-Adajar captured the U17 Women title, Noah Bales won U15 Men, Ava Dombrowsky took the U15 Women crown, Elijah Bales won U13 Men, and Catarina Miquelino claimed the U11 Women title.

The masters divisions added to the depth of the championship field, with Jonathan Lowry winning Masters 30+ Men, James Bales taking Masters 40+ Men, Karin Bales winning Masters 50+ Women, Keith Berryhill claiming Masters 60+ Men, 1980 Olympian Jan Olesinski winning Masters 70+ Men, and 1968 Olympian Tom Lough capturing the Masters 80+ Men title.

Team USA Wraps Up Budapest World Cup with Qualification Performances and Semifinal Appearance

The UIPM 2026 Pentathlon World Cup in Budapest marked the final stop of the 2026 World Cup circuit, bringing together 237 athletes across the qualification rounds. The field included 135 men and 102 women representing 39 countries, giving Team USA another opportunity to test itself against a deep international field before returning home for U.S. Nationals.

Team USA continued its 2026 international season with 11 athletes competing across the men’s and women’s qualification rounds. The women’s team was represented by Madison Gonzalez, Cassandra Steptoe, Kseniya Voronina, Kim Yu Hannah, Rebecca Langrehr, and Ingrid Mayer. On the men’s side, Team USA was represented by Luke Filar, Tristen Bell, Temirkhan Sabdenbek, Matthias Preidl, and Michael Arish*ta.

From a team perspective, Head Coach Vaho Iagorashvili said Budapest showed continued progress for the U.S. athletes across multiple disciplines.

“Overall, I’m pleased with the individual performances from our athletes and the way they competed against a strong World Cup field,” Iagorashvili said. “We saw athletes execute well in different sports and gain valuable experience competing at the highest international level.”

Coach Thora Meyer-Efland also pointed to the team environment as a positive, noting that the athletes continued to support one another throughout the competition.

“The team again supported each other and cheered on the athletes during the competition,” Meyer-Efland said. “Compared to World Cup 2, you could see ascending results at World Cup Budapest.”
