"Tropical forests face a lot of threats, particularly from the logging and agriculture industries. Their continued disappearance from the face of the Earth is therefore no great news — but new research suggests that they may be disappearing even faster than we thought. And that could have big implications for the global effort against climate change."

My fellow vendor Pema Sherpa gave me some Nepali paper products to try out. When I looked them up, I realized why: these are exactly the kind of thing i look for and have been a sustainable industry for thousands of years!

If I said "save the rainforest" would you immediately say "save all the forests?"
Matt McGorry on Twitter
“ doesn't mean other lives don't. Like people who say "Save The Rainforests" aren't saying "F**k All Other Types of Forests"”

Here's a concrete thing we can do to try and get the Washington Redsk*ns to change their name: Boycott FedEx! They are the major sponsor for the team and lots of Native American tribes are boycotting them.
“The marketing partnership between FedEx and the NFL team continues to promote an offensive term used during a deplorable and inhumane period in our history suffered by the ancestors of our American Indian brothers and sisters,” said President Richard Peterson. “FedEx’s continued support of this team is disheartening and we encourage other tribes to rise up in solidarity to support this movement.”

Reading the and it seems the Pope really gets the problems of the Amazon:
38. Let us mention, for example, those richly biodiverse lungs of our planet which are the Amazon and the Congo basins, or the great aquifers and glaciers. We know how important these are for the entire earth and for the future of humanity. The ecosystems of tropical forests possess an enormously complex biodiversity which is almost impossible to appreciate fully, yet when these forests are burned down or levelled for purposes of cultivation, within the space of a few years countless species are lost and the areas frequently become arid wastelands. A delicate balance has to be maintained when speaking about these places, for we cannot overlook the huge global economic interests which, under the guise of protecting them, can undermine the sovereignty of individual nations.

I'm at the Green Festival Expo in DC, and my first customer walked up and asked me how my bracelets were "more special" than regular h**p bracelets. I replied that they were made from palm leaves in the Amazon by women who are under threat of oil development and that by selling them, the women earn a living that allows them to stay on their land and block the oil companies.
"That's pretty deep." He replied.
Yeah. Yeah it is.
