Spring has arrived and babies are hatching!!

As we took to the trail we paused by a tree to discuss whether it would be a good spot to hang a bear bag and one of my students spotted this guy just chillin right next to us. We each took turns gently holding him and the kids knew how to identify that he was a “friendly” snake (aka harmless and not venomous). They loved it! And then we put him back right where we found him.

It’s not often we get to practice our shelter building in class but on our last day of camp we had an extra 10 minutes. They scrambled to find some wood and used what they had.
Proud of these kids as they learned the importance of why they would need shelter and when they would need to find (or build) it.

I bet my husband that if I lifted the old piece of plywood laying outside our fence there would be a snake under it. 😏
Found him!
Just a little backyard buddy! This is a common king snake and poses no danger to myself or our pups. Actually, he may even help protect our yard from venomous snakes as they sometimes will eat them. He can stay. 😉 (And hubby didn’t actually take the bet 😁)

Typically on our last day of class I have the kids video each other and talk about what they learned over our 10 weeks together as well as what their favorite part was or perhaps least favorite part. However, for this class I decided to have them write it in their own words and I love it! Still young and working on our spelling and grammar skills but I think they did great.

Spring is here, fun is happening. As the days get longer and the weather warms up, we have all the more opportunity to get outside. Don’t let it scare you…it’s simple and should be stress free.

Learning to cook outside - whether over a fire or on a camp stove - is always a fun time!
