180° Rule

LE ranges are so safe they hurt.

The overwhelming majority of LE ranges and courses of fire are strictly flat-range evaluations where no one is allowed downrange. The reason for this is “safety.”
It’s interesting that almost every stage I shoot at a USPSA match would get me kicked off most LE ranges because someone would be considered “downrange.”

To my knowledge, USPSA has never had a competitor tag another competitor, and they regularly have folks moving at extreme speed while working their way through stages (courses of fire).

As “professionals” who carry fi****ms for a living, I think the truth is the majority are so bad with their fi****ms handling and capability that it would be unsafe to have them in this type of environment.

What’s sad to me is that what we generally see on the range training-wise doesn’t translate to what we are seeing in actual OISs. The standards we have are low, and they aren’t even truly enforced.

Getting away from only doing flat-range drills is needed. We need to incorporate movement and targets with differing degrees of difficulty for law enforcement.

Real life doesn’t happen on a flat range…
