The medical community will tell you 42-week placentas "expire" and need to be "managed." They'll point to white calcifications and tiny infarcts as proof of "aging."

But your placenta doesn't get old and become worthless. Science says so.
(They want us to believe that about our own bodies, too, remember?)

But the medical community will tell you that as the placenta ages it develops calcium deposits and infarcts, which are common in term pregnancies and usually clinically insignificant.

They'll tell you that the risk of stillbirth increases beyond 41 weeks.

They want us scared. Because when we’re scared, we’re compliant. We do what we’re told.

But let’s look at the evidence: stillbirth risk goes from 0.1% at 41 weeks to 0.3% at 42 weeks. That's 2 extra cases per 1,000 births.

Studies tell us that placentas show microscopic changes beyond 41 weeks, but whether this is "aging" and something to worry about or just adaptation is still up for debate.

The medical community likes to push for inductions and cesareans because of liability fears, not medical certainty. The 42-week "deadline" exists because providers can't legally manage beyond that point without risking lawsuits—even when individual moms and babies are totally fine.

On the flip side, induction comes with its own risks, including higher cesarean rates (especially for first-time moms), potential for fetal distress, breastfeeding struggles, and other complications.

Elective cesareans carry significant risks that deserve serious consideration. It’s major abdominal surgery, after all, and recovery time can be way more challenging.

The law won't let providers go beyond 42 weeks because of medical malpractice concerns—not because your placenta suddenly fails. This isn't about your health, it's about covering their asses.

You deserve full informed consent. Know the real risks of waiting, induction, or cesarean. Ask for evidence, not just "standard of care." Request non-stress tests and ultrasounds to monitor baby's well-being. You have the right to say "no" to interventions that don't align with your values.

YOUR BODY, YOUR BABY, YOUR CHOICE.

Practitioner Intake Form for South Jersey Perinatal Resource List 31/01/2026

Hey everyone!

I’m updating my list of trusted local practitioners who share my values of inclusivity and social justice.

This resource list will be included in my client toolkit. Many of my clients come from birthworker referrals, but those who don’t are often new to doulas and birth education—so it’s a great opportunity to be found by folks who aren't necessarily looking.

If you’re a birthworker or local practitioner who serves the perinatal community and are interested in being included, please complete this quick form:
