Dirndl und Bier! Schuetzenverein sei g'gruesst!
This week’s trivia question was: In What century did Advent Wreaths begin?

Answer: 16th century

History: The tradition of Advent wreaths was started by German Lutherans in the 16th century, and today the wreath is still an icon of Christmas in Germany. The wreath consists of four candles in a bed of pine cones, berries, dried flowers and Christmas ornaments. Different families have different traditions when it comes to Adventskranz. Some will bring it out during the first week of December and burn one candle every Sunday in the lead up to Christmas. Others will display the advent wreath on the last Sunday before Christmas and have the entire family sit around it, munching on Christmas delicacies, singing Christmas songs and watching Christmas movies.

A fellow Saint Louis organization has some more in-depth information about this fun Christmas tradition. Head over to the St. Louis Schuetzenverein (Shooting Club of St. Louis) page and most recent post!

National Veterans Memorial and Museum | Columbus, OH

"Fifty years have passed since the final American military forces left Vietnam and our remaining prisoners of war were returned. Even after the passage of five decades, we still owe these veterans a large debt of gratitude.

During the conflict, political controversy and disagreement were sadly misdirected toward those who had admirably served our nation. When these brave warriors returned from Vietnam, they received neither a hero’s welcome nor appreciation for their service that they deserved, but instead got apathy, anger and hate. Disappointingly, many were left to struggle alone with self-doubt, shame and the memories of those left behind.

After their wartime service ended, these unsung heroes went to work, served in government and became involved in their communities. Vietnam War-era veterans went on to lead Fortune 500 companies, direct Oscar-winning films, create a prominent computer-programming language, map the human genome and many other outstanding accomplishments. Today, there are approximately 6 million living veterans from the Vietnam era – more than 30% of America’s veteran population.

March 29 – National Vietnam War Veterans Day – is dedicated to these heroes. You can honor them by watching the National Veterans Memorial and Museum’s Welcome Home Ceremony at 10 a.m. EDT. The keynote speaker will be Capt. J. Charles “Charlie” Plumb (USN, Ret.), a naval aviator who was shot down and held prisoner in Vietnam for six years. He’s legendary for his story “Who Packs Your Parachute?”

The 50th National Vietnam War Veterans Day is a national opportunity to share our appreciation for the sacrifices made by a generation of veterans. Thank you, Vietnam veterans, for your courage in war and service to our nation, both in and out of uniform."
-The words of Wayne Peacock, USAA President & CEO.

National Veterans Memorial and Museum | Columbus, OH Their stories shaped a nation. Our freedom is their legacy. Come share in the celebration, and be inspired by the courage of those who served.

Who doesn't love the Sound of Music? Check out this short post about Maria von Trapp

A vintage postcard of Maria von Trapp. 💌 In honor of her birthday today, here are four fun facts you may not know about her — some of which were included in 's film THE SOUND OF MUSIC and some that were altered in the film's storyline:

1️⃣ In 1924, at the age of 19, she entered Nonnberg Abbey, a monastery in Salzburg, as a postulant intending to become a nun.

2️⃣ In 1926, Maria was asked to teach one of the seven children of Georg von Trapp (not be a governess). She only intended to stay for 10 months.

3️⃣ Georg asked her to marry him in 1927. She wrote in her autobiography that she wasn't in love with the naval commander and really wanted to be a nun. However, she loved the children so she said yes.

4️⃣ The von Trapp family was already musically inclined before Maria came along. By 1935, the family was singing at a local church in Austria before they fled to the United States. A few years later, they pursued a musical career as the Trapp Family Singers.

You can read Maria von Trapp's full story in her 1949 memoir, "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers." Read more here: https://amzn.to/3CMchkP

Das Bevo has been a lot over the decades. Here are some fun facts about the St Louis site!

Despite its whimsical appearance, Das Bevo was once used as architectural propaganda. When growing calls for the prohibition of alcohol threatened to leave the nation permanently “dry,” Anheuser-Busch built a series of charming “old world” taverns to try and convince the public that beer was a safe—and even necessary—ingredient of a healthy society.

With a whirling windmill, roaring fireplaces, and crisp tablecloths, Bevo Mill was the opposite of the average saloon. While it couldn’t stop Prohibition from being going into effect in 1919, Bevo Mill never fails to provide the thrill of seeing a Dutch windmill plopped down in south city.

Club member Norman Waterwiese took a trip recently. Here's what he shared:
"Last Sunday I was driving to Cleveland and on the way connected with our fellow Schützen from Columbus.

We had a bier and dinner at an old firehouse which had been converted to a German oriented microbrewery/restaurant.

The special that night was duck schnitzel and it was wonderful.

Was happy Reinhard and Melinda had the time to meet.
Gemüt Biergarten was the name."

Don't forget to put your shoes out or if you do stockings make sure they're ready!

It is Nikolausabend (Nicholas Eve), and that means it's "Krampustag" in Wolfgangsee, Austria, where Nikolaus' fur clad companions are getting ready to run wild around the streets.

Causing as much trouble, and making as much noise, as they can, and scaring children with their willow branch rods and clanging bells as St. Nicholas, in his bishop's regalia, gives them "Guatsln". Apples and nuts, figs, carob cookies and gingerbread.

In an absolute doozy of a game, Germany has been knocked out of the World Cup despite beating Costa Rica 4-2. The win wasn't enough with Japan and Spain going through to the last 16.
Just hours after one European heavyweight, Belgium, had been knocked out, Spain and Germany faced the gauntlet, against Japan and Costa Rica, two teams that had been written off by most soccer experts as having little chance of reaching the last 16 before the World Cup started. Despite those predictions, it was an evening that began with the possibility that all four teams were capable of progressing to the next stage.
That's all we're going to say but if you didn't catch the game, definitely go watch the highlights!

On the other hand, Team USA is still in so tune in to see them play tomorrow! ⚽

The evening was momentous for another reason -- Stéphanie Frappart became the first woman to referee a men's World Cup match. Alongside assistants Neuza Back from Brazil and Karen Diaz from Mexico, they made up an all-female refereeing trio overseeing the match between Germany and Costa Rica.
