Too Much of a Good Thing Is Also a Bad Thing
Today I want to talk about a common substance that many of us depend upon for productivity: Caffeine. Running out of coffee can become an emergency, but too much of anything can be bad for you. Caffeine from coffee is my biggest vice. It wakes me up in the morning and powers me through to my productive hours mid-morning. However, it should be noted that the effects of coffee are detrimental too. [ 224 more words ]

Conscious Prioritization Beats Procrastination
Today I want to talk a bit about procrastination. Procrastination has many layers and can take many insidious forms, but I will only talk about one form today. The many causes for procrastination can be a different post. Today I am going to talk about the procrastination that comes when you do not start working on the project or task that you know will benefit you, but somehow never really gets started. Let the Sun Shine In
Today I want to talk about something simple and beneficial for all. Simple, natural sunlight to boost productivity and general health. It is something I too often take for granted. Simple sunshine to let me know that the day is started. Sunlight also affects hormones. Sunlight boosts Melatonin production in the pineal gland. Sunlight also decreases cortisol levels throughout the body. [ 132 more words ]

Think Goldilocks for Focus
Today I want to talk about focus and staying “in the zone”. Most of my days are spent doing a combination of things I like (and want) to do and things I do not want to do or find really boring. Sometimes the things I want to do can be few and far between. Do you ever have those days? [ 359 more words ]

Stressors that control our lives
Today I want to talk about stress. Stress is the pressure that we and society place upon ourselves to do certain things, usually within a time frame. For example, it is expected that most women who want to be married, will do so before the age of 40. Brides over 40 years old are a small minority. Women feel the pressure (the stress) from society to marry before the age of 40. [ 333 more words ]

Time to Meditate
Today I want to talk about meditation and productivity. Some people will hear the word “meditation” and think of some bald Zen monk in an orange robe. Yes, those guys also meditate. But so do Russell Simmons (Def Jam Founder), Bill George (CEO Medtronic), Roger Berkowitz (CEO Legal Sea Foods), Robert Stiller (Green Mountain Coffee Founder), Ramani Ayer (Former CEO Hartford Financial Services Group), certainly Oprah (no explanation needed), and many more also practice meditation. The Difference between “Heck yes” and “yes”
Today I want to talk about saying “Heck yes” to increase our productivity. In the age of the internet, opportunities abound. We can and do say “yes” to all kinds of things that may or may not be helpful to our businesses and lives. Soon we become overbooked and feel like there is no time to get anything accomplished. Our focus is so scattered that we do not actually achieve our goals. [ 286 more words ]

No Time to Think
Today I want to talk about the scheduling of tasks. In a new study to be published in the Journal Management Science, Harvard Business School Doctoral Candidate María R. Ibáñez et. Al. studied 2.7M radiological cases where doctors had the option of prioritizing their own work. The radiologists that prioritized their own work ended up being 13% less efficient than those that followed the company’s first scan in and the first scan out procedure. [ 251 more words ]

My Biggest Distraction and my Best Helper
Today I want to talk about distractions, specifically the biggest distraction that you likely have. As I sit here typing this, my cell phone is less than a foot away sitting on my desk, waiting to send some kind of alert to distract me. It dings at me for Facebook updates from my relatives. I stop what I am doing and see what the notification is about and if I need to do anything about it. [ 244 more words ]

Leverage Time Pockets for Maximum Productivity
Today, I want to talk about leveraging small pockets. Small pockets of time. I noticed these pockets as I give myself “time buffers” between appointments throughout my day. For example, I would have a scheduled call at 10 am that would last for 45 minutes, and then another call scheduled for 11 am. I would schedule myself a 15-minute time buffer. [ 258 more words ]

Season Change makes for Rough Monday
Hello, Today I want to talk about seasonal changes as related to productivity. Today is the combination of 2 major seasonal shifts. If you live in the United States, these shifts are “Bracket Monday” and the time change of “spring forward”. It might be a rough day. First, for those that do not know or do not participate, Bracket Monday is the day after Selection Sunday for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. [ 342 more words ]

Appreciation and Gratitude affects Productivity
Today I want to talk about appreciation and gratitude as this also affects productivity. From a corporate perspective, employee appreciation is a big factor on productivity and quality of life. This affects every employee and even the profitability of the company as a whole. A poll from Tjinsite found that more than 35% of employees considered lack of recognition at work to be their biggest hindrance to productivity. [ 286 more words ]

Create your life with “the one thing”
Today I want to talk about the one thing. The One Thing is a book by Gary W. Keller and Jay Papasan. This book talks about prioritization. Gamification for Productivity
Today I want to talk about gamification. In corporate circles, gamification is the application of different parts of playing a game to other activities. This would be scoring points, collecting rewards or trophies, and general competition. This phenomena works because it can take something potentially tedious and make it into a game. The basic points that are included in most games are Feedback, Friends, and Fun. [ 282 more words ]

I have a problem. I say “yes” to just about everything. Maybe you can relate. It slows me down in almost every facet of my life and business. I have so much on my plate I can’t even see the table. Small Changes in Scenary for Big Results
Hello, Today I want to talk about changing scenery and the boost it provides to your productivity. For a long time, I have sat here at my desk, grinding out what I thought were decent blog posts and other writing pieces. I would occasionally hit writers block and be stuck for a while. Sleep for Optimal Productivity (and Sanity)
Today I want to talk about sleep. Sleep is little understood in our culture and not very prized. Instead, it is a badge of honor to work all night or simply work until you fall over from exhaustion. This should be understood from the prospective of productivity. When a mind and body are rested and fresh, theoretically optimal work output is achieved. [ 275 more words ]

Dangers of Burnout
Today I wanted to talk about burnout. Burnout can be thought of as a physical or mental collapse caused by overwork, or stress, or both. Burnout does not happen to someone overnight and can not be fixed overnight. But I think we can all agree it is epidemic in most places. The Mayo Clinic identifies job burnout coming from a lack of control at your job, unclear job expectations, dysfunctional workplace dynamics, extremes of activity, lack of social support, and work / life imbalance. Overwork versus Work for Better Health
Today I want to discuss the difference between work and overwork. For some people overwork happens at 25 hours and for some people overwork happens at 100 hours. But the symptoms are all the same: stress, anxiety, fatigue, depression, immune problems, and most importantly, much less productive. Not only is this a health issue but a business issue. Overwork happens when we push ourselves too far to accomplish something or worse, try to accomplish something. [ 189 more words ]

Work Life Boundaries come before Work Life Balance
This week I will talk a bit about work / life boundaries. This is not the same as work life balance. I think the balance shifts as your business grows. The work / life balance cannot exist without the boundary between them. This boundary problem has gotten so bad that France has passed a law effective January 1, 2017 for businesses with more than 50 people to establish protocols about checking email in the off hours.
