Tuesday Toileting Tips
Swimming season is just about to get started. What do we do with our newly diaper free kid?
At ditching diapers we are 100% all about no diapers once we start potty training, but does that include swim diapers?
Nope!
Accidents are going to happen when we are potty training. They will be less frequent as time goes on. But how stressful would it be to see a little p**p swimming around the pool with us.
We know kids are less likely to tell us they have to p*e/p**p when they are engaging in activities they love.
We want to protect our sanity and the health of the other swimmers. If there is any doubt in your mind that your child might p**p in their swimsuit, put that swim diaper on them and enjoy your day!

What is the difference between reinforcement and bribery?
You might think reinforcement and bribery are the same because they both offer a reward. The difference is in the timing of the reward. Bribery leads to more disruptive behaviors and reinforcement increases desired behaviors.
Bribes are when we promise something AFTER a challenging behavior starts. Reinforcement is earned and is an incentive for a job well done.
Adults are reinforced with paychecks, positive feedback, and positive changes. Kids have a different reinforcement bank that we fill:-) We pair physical reinforcements with positive praise and eventually fade out the physical to just the praise.

There are so many different potty training methods out there. One of the biggest questions I get asked is do we start bottomless or with underwear.
I have potty trained A LOT of kids and have found that when you start bottomless and then introduce underwear problems begin to surface. The underwear is a barrier just like the diaper was, it can resemble that old diaper feeling. Kids think Oh I can start p*eing in this again. Training this way can initially work but then when you put the underwear back on they can regress. Some kids have no problem with the transition of adding underwear into the mix. Others struggle and regress to having accidents. If they regress you are doubling your work. You now must reteach them that they have to p*e in the potty and not in their underwear. Their potty training motivation and tolerance can decrease. Bottomless does work for some kids but not others.
When you start right away with transitioning from diapers to underwear you skip that step of having to teach them twice and the possible regression. We are teaching them that they still have something on their diaper area but we can’t p*e in this, we p*e in the toilet. They will learn that this new piece of clothing doesn’t hold the p*e in and it isn’t like diapers. It clicks faster and you don’t have the step of adding underwear in after you already trained them to p*e in the potty.
Other issues that pop up when starting out bottomless
💦When boys start bottomless they can just p*e anywhere and don’t have the uncomfortable wet feeling underwear provides.
💦Girls also wont be in wet underwear and can walk away from the mess that was made with little issue.
💦They don’t get that uncomfortable wet feeling they would if they had underwear on.
There are some situations that we would suggest to go bottomless. I will touch on those later.

Tuesday Toileting Tips!
The big question! Should we teach boys to sit or stand to go p*e. I always recommend teaching them to sit first.
Until they are p*eing AND p**ping on the potty consistently we have them sit to p*e. Here are a few reasons why.
💦 Standing to p*e can delay p**p training, increase accidents and withholding.
💦 Sometimes you p*e and p**p at the same time. We want them to be comfortable p*eing sitting down.
💦 Consistency is EVERYTHING. First we teach them to sit when p*eing and p**ping. Once that is mastered we can start to change things up and teach them to stand.
💦 It can get messy. We already have enough to clean up!

Your first trip out of the house when potty training
It can be scary to leave the house for the first time when potty training your child.
Here are some tips to making that first trip successful.
⏩ Make the trip a quick one- walk around the block, go to the store for 1 or 2 items only
🚽 Begin reminding them to use the potty 30-45 min before you want to actually leave the house. Don't leave the house until they successfully use the bathroom
🚽 Know where the toilets are at the location you are going.
🏞 Bring your travel potty with you to the park. Have a blanket to block your child while using the potty.
👖Bring a change of clothes in case an accident happens.
❌ Do not put a diaper on. This will only confuse your child. Diapers are only to be used for sleeping.
