Hey Troublemakers!
Last week I joined a small group of friends for good food and drink. One of my friends said something shocking.
The conversations are generally light and jovial. Every so often politics and relationship stories are interjected.
The conversation pivoted to relationships. One of our crew (let's call him Sam) is in the midst of getting a divorce. Sam is in his mid-30s. They were married for about 4 years. Yet, it was a tough 4 years trying to make it work.
Sam poured his heart out. He felt he did everything to keep the marriage going. When he finished his story, someone else made a surprising statement. Let's call her Mary.
Mary is a shade over 50 and never married. She's not looking too hard either. Loves her life. She travels a lot. Runs a lot. Has a very good paying gig.
Mary stated she's been told marriage is the toughest thing you'll ever do.
You know what?
She's right!
Blasphemy! How can I agree?
If you know me as a coach, you know I'm constantly challenging perspectives. In the aim to make the best actions towards great goals. A happy life.
If you'd like to hear the whole story, then message me. I'll send you the rest. It's one from my weekly email newsletter. If you'd like to be on the list, send me your email.
Be Strong. Be Well!

What We Learned As Kids But Forget As Adults...
We learn a ton of life lessons growing up. For various reasons some stick better than others. There's one in particular we should use much more than we do.
Stick with me for a quick story...
I met up with an old pal this past week. We've know each other for decades. Let's call him Rory.
You see, Rory is going through a tough time work-wise. Rory works as a package delivery driver. He was told recently the pay structure he was used to is going away.
He will now be paid per stop instead of paid per hour. As in when he delivers a package. The problem this represents for Rory is he has 2 hours of work to do to load the truck before delivering a single package. On top of that he typically works at least 9 hours a day. Often working 10 - 11 hours to deliver all the packages he's given. Overtime will no longer be paid either since he's paid per stop,
These changes will reduce his pay by as much as a 1/3.
The new pay structure won't cover his monthly bills mainly due to his health insurance premiums and home costs.
Rory told me all this because we're friends. I give him big props to be brave and tell me his struggles.
As he told me his story, it occurred to me I have another friend (let's call him Billy) in a different delivery business that might know of job openings in his company.
A quick text and call to Billy uncovered an opportunity. It turns out the company is gearing up for a sizable hiring campaign very soon. The job would pay substantially more.
Rory was able to find out where to apply. He's now is on his way seeking out a new job.
So, what the lesson here?
As we're growing up, we're told to ask for help if we need it. Our parents, teachers, coaches, and family are there for us.
Yet when we make to turn to adulthood, we stop asking for help. Especially when it comes to career and relationships. Partly because our society suggests we can figure it our on our own. But we shouldn't.
If Rory didn't confide in me, then he may not have discovered a new path. This new job would substantially increase his pay. A new life!
When life is throwing you lemons reach out to those you know have your back. Ask for help when you need it. Raise your hand.
This is where coaching can be instrumental in helping you reach your goals. It's not just ok to ask for help as adult. It's critical.
Remember asking for help allowed us to become the people we are today. A lesson worth repeating!

When have you lost something you never had?
The Augusta National Women's Amateur (ANWA) tournament's final day was Saturday. And if you missed it, you missed a huge life lesson.
Players aged 15 to 22 played 3 rounds at different courses to decide the champion. The final round played at the famed Augusta National Club home to The Masters.
Two players were vying for the title on the last two holes. Latanna Stone (20 year old LSU college student) and Anna Davis (16 year old high schooler). Anna was one hole ahead...
Latanna birdied the 16th hole to a 2-shot lead. Anna was playing the 17th hole aware Latanna was up 2. Anna made a tough par on 17 thinking she needed at least a birdie on 18 to make it interesting.
What unfolded gives you insight and applies to everyday life.
At this point Anna mentally has no baggage. She's the underdog. She feels no pressure. All her energy and focus is in chasing Latanna the leader. To get a birdie. Even then it feels like a long shot she can win.
Latanna on the other hand has self-induced pressure. Leading by two with two holes to play is a great position. It's the position you dream about in a golf tournament. There's a moment when you let you mind wander and believe I got this! A moment when you think it's yours. The problem? You don't have it yet.
Anna moved quickly through 18 completely focused on making birdie. And she nearly did as her putt missed by an inch if not less. A no-stress tap in par. Resigned to 2nd place she strolled off 18 green still down 2.
Latanna on the other hand hit her tee shot on the right side of the fairway on 17. A good position. Strangely she seemed to be questioning herself internally as she walked towards her ball. I knew then, her mindset was shifting.
Latanna's approach shot on 17 was well short of the green. A critical mistake at the worst time. If she puts it on the green from that 2nd shot instead, she most likely strolls to victory. You could see her thinking she might lose the championship.
A heavy handed chip onto the green went well past the hole. Her 4th shot (putt) went about 10 feet again by the hole. Now it's not an easy putt for bogey. She missed that putt too to shoot an inconceivable double bogey 6. Now in a tie with Anna going into 18.
Latanna's mindset and focus were off. She made another bad swing as her tee shot went into the trees on the right. A similar swing from the 17th tee. A nice 2nd shot to short of the green left her a chip and a putt away from a playoff.
In the span of about 10 minutes her play had shifted. She was finding ways to make mistakes instead of hitting the shots that catapulted her into the lead the whole day.
Another bad chip gave her a slippery 15-footer for par to force a playoff. That putt wasn't even close. It settled at least foot away from the hole. With that Anna was the unlikely champion.
The two different mindsets were the difference. Latanna began focusing on losing the tournament she hadn't won yet.
The lesson...
We do this in our daily lives. When you commit to wanting something badly enough, you'll become fearful of not getting it. In order to get whatever you desire, maintain your successful focus to realize that result.

Did you know time machines do exist...
Can you imagine time travel? What would you do?
I'm going out on a limb and say you've already experienced it.
Crazy? Absurd! Ridiculous...
Well, not so after I explain.
You see, I experienced an event where I was transported decades back in time late last week. Actually I can tell you the teleportation dates were from 1996 to 2000.
My good friend Joe was premiering his latest movie at an independent film festival. To help support him and the film, I booked a trip to DC for a couple days. Two other friends decided to join in the fun too.
Understand these friendships were forged many decades ago starting in the mid-1990's and fortified for years after while we all lived in Colorado.
Libations and good times were flowing after the premier. That's when the old stories started to come out. Stories that are funny, heartfelt, and at times embarrassing.
Have you ever been around a group of people that haven't seen each other in decades? Do you notice how they interact?
Many will mentally shift back and act how they were all those years ago. Stoic and responsible husbands/fathers will behave like uninhibited teenagers.
It is a sight to behold! It's truly like taking a time machine to days long gone. And that's exactly what happened last week.
The buddies I hung out with reverted right back to their old selves. Giving regular life a rest to enjoy telling glory stories and perhaps giving in to a slight bit of mayhem.
This comes as a shock to some friends and family not around during the days of yore. Who is this person they ask? They are almost unrecognizable!
I challenge the notion this is a bad thing. It's better to appreciate it as something special. Because the old days were emotional and meaningful. They should be appreciated and revered. As should who you were during those times. Not perfect because you're still not.
So, the next time you have a reunion or weekend getaway with people from the past, take a ride in the time machine. It will bring back memories you suppressed and enjoyed from long ago.
It may just change your perspective.
