King Arts is hoping to run another season of Girls on the Run for 3rd-5th grade girls from Feb-May 2019, but we can't do it without volunteer coaches.
If you or someone you know is interested in coaching or would like to learn more, please contact our GOTR Site Coordinator, Miriam Barnett. If you coach, your daughter/student is guaranteed a position on the team. Coaches do not need to be runners or have previous experience. They are required to attend a one-day training by Girls on the Run.
GOTR Chicago

Yesterday we talked about comfortable and uncomfortable feelings. We asked the girls to pay attention to their emotions between now and Friday, and to notice what feels comfortable and uncomfortable and why.

We had a fun first practice today! We've started learning each other's names and considered ways we can support each other, be respectful, and build community. See you all on Friday!

Registration is Now Open for the 7th Season of Girls on the Run for 3rd-5th Grade Girls
Girls on the Run (www.gotrchicago.org) is an after-school program that inspires girls to recognize their inner strength and celebrate what makes them one of a kind. Trained, volunteer coaches lead small teams through research-based curricula which includes dynamic discussions, activities and running games. Over the course of the 11-week program, girls in 3rd-5th grade develop essential skills to help them navigate their worlds and establish a lifetime appreciation for health and fitness. The program culminates with girls positively impacting their communities through a service project and being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5K event.
All girls in 3rd-5th grade are welcome to register for our 7th season of GOTR and upon doing so will be placed in a lottery. Currently, we can accommodate up to 20 girls*. All interested participants must agree to the following:
1) Attend practices on Mondays and Wednesdays at King Arts from 2:45-4p between Sept. 11-Nov. 15th. Participants are allowed up to 4 absences.
2) Attend the celebratory 5K in Grant Park on Sat. Nov. 18, 2017.
3) We will run/play games outside every time weather permits! Participants do not need previous running experience, but MUST be willing to try! We have a 100% success rate; every participant who has started the 5K has completed it!
4) The cost to participate is $100 and will be due at the time of registration. Fees will be refunded if your participant is not chosen in the registration lottery. (Scholarships information is below.) Registration includes GOTR t-shirt, water bottle, snacks, and registration for the season finale 5K.
5) After we begin the season, we also ask families who are able, to contribute $20 for a race day team hat and additional supplies.
6) Each participant is required to have a running buddy (age 16 or older) to run with her at the celebratory 5K on Nov. 18th. Her running buddy will be required to register for the 5K separately.
7) Participants are required to wear running shoes to every practice in order to participate.
Please register by Sunday, Sept. 3rd. You may do so online: https://www.raceplanner.com/register/index/3R4EN43YD3SICSM?sid=75e5d28ed914490cb5863982a520cc73 or via the call center number: (312) 313-0280. The team lottery will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 5th. If your daughter/student is not selected in the lottery, she will be placed on a waitlist.
Scholarships
Scholarships for up to 100% of the program fee are available. The King Arts PTA offers 50% scholarships ($50). Please send us a message for instructions on how to register with a scholarship. [email protected]
*Registration Lottery and Team Size Limitations
We currently have 3 full-time volunteer coaches, which include one King Arts parent and 2 community volunteers. Per Girls on the Run coach to participant ratio requirements, we are able to offer one team of 20 girls at this time. If we had one additional full-time coach or 2 additional part-time coaches, we would be able to accommodate 2 teams of 15 girls each, or up to 30 participants. If you or someone you know is interested in coaching or would like to learn more, please contact our GOTR Site Coordinator, Miriam Barnett. If you coach, your daughter/student is guaranteed a position on the team. Coaches do not need to be runners or have previous experience. Coaches are required to attend a one-day training on Sept. 9th.
Please contact our Site Coordinator, Miriam Barnett at [email protected] if you have questions, would like more information about coaching, or need instructions for registering with a scholarship.
