Have you ever met a woman who didn’t ask to fight but fought anyway?

That was Ana María Martínez de Nisser, a Creole woman born in 1812 in Rionegro, Colombia 🇨🇴, a time when courage had a dress code, and women were told to stay home while men wrote history.

But Ana refused to be a footnote.

When the War of the Supremes erupted in the 1840s, she didn’t hide behind the walls of her home; she rode straight to the front lines. Armed not only with a rifle, but with conviction, she fought beside her husband for a Colombia still learning the meaning of freedom.

And when the battle ended, she did what few men of her time dared: she wrote it all down.
Her Diario de los sucesos de la revolución en Antioquia became one of the first war accounts by a woman in Latin America.

Ana María was a Creole woman who used her privilege to break the silence for others. Her courage reminds us that every movement for justice needs both those who fight the system and those who challenge its silence.

She stood, she fought, and she wrote not for medals, but for memory.

So when we speak of Colombia’s independence, remember her too: the woman who picked up a pen where others laid down their swords. ✍🏽🇨🇴

Remembering the Last Buffalo Soldiers 24th Infantry Regiment who were one of the last all-black infantry units to fight in combat before President Eisenhower put an end to segregation in the military. For the past 28 years the AVC has brought together dozens of notable veterans of the last 80 years of history for our Annual Veterans Conference, where they share their lessons and experiences with an audience of several hundred students from each of the military service academies & ROTC programs from across the country. Participants range from surviving heroes of WWII to recipients of the Medal of Honor to young Special Operations veterans of today’s military. The weekend of programming concludes with American Valor: A Salute to Our Heroes, a black-tie gala filmed as a Veterans Day television special, airing on ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox stations across the country, and to all military personnel around the world on American Forces Network. We look forward to our 28th Annual Conference & Gala this coming November!
