For National Dance Week, GDS offers a VERY brief look into Dance Fitness in America.
Dance fitness in America can perhaps be credited to Jacki Sorensen who is also credited with creating Aerobic Dancing in 1969. She was inspired to combine dance with fitness by Dr. Kenneth Cooper’s book “Aerobics” which popularized cardiovascular exercise. Judi Sheppard Missett joined the fray when she founded the popular Jazzercise movement in the 1970s.
Dance fitness reached even greater heights in the 1980s when made even more popular by celebrities and personalities such as Jane Fonda and Richard Simmons.
Fonda’s workouts, which incorporated dance elements such as disco funk, Latin dances, and ballet became some of the highest grossing VHS (Google what that is) productions of all time.
Dance fitness continues to thrive in the U.S. and has seen the rise of other popular programs such as Step Aerobics, Zumba, Tae Bo, Shaun T Fitness, and The Bar Method to name a few.
Glenwood Dance Studio is proud to be a home for another dance fitness program - BeMoved Fitness, led by Brenda Fournier. Founded by Chicagoland dancer/artist Sherry Zuckner, BeMoved Fitness is “passionate about sharing the joy of dance with people of all movement abilities”.
Come move with us every Saturday at 11:00 a.m

For National Dance Week, GDS offers a VERY brief look into the history of jazz dance in America:
Jazz dance is often considered to be an American creation, which is true, but its roots are found in the dances and music of various African cultures that were brought here through the slave trade. These movements and expressions are what became the foundation for the stylization of jazz dance as we know it today.
The dances of the enslaved Africans were copied and appropriated by White artists leading them to gain more popularity among the masses via minstrel shows and vaudeville acts.
Both jazz dance and music continued to evolve and garner attraction over the decades, leading to dance fads and styles such as the Jitterbug, Swing, and the Charlston. Dances that again, often originated in Black social events before finding their way into main-stream culture.
By the 1940s and ‘50s, jazz dance could be found in many clubs and ballrooms in the U.S. It’s also around this time that jazz started to become a studied technique. Some early pioneers of this movement are Katherine Dunham, Jack Cole, Alvin Ailey, and a Chicagoland favorite, Gus Giordano.
Jazz dance continues to morph, and has come to include many styles and variations such as tap and other variants such as Afro, urban, and lyrical jazz. Glenwood Dance studio is happy to be able to offer a slice of the broad spectrum of this fun and malleable dance style. Come dance with us, in: 5, 6, 7, 8 - go!
