COMMENT “MB” & I’ll send my Flawless Flexibility program to your DMs right now because…

The #1 mistake figure skaters make when trying to get a HIGHER spiral?

They DROP their chest straight toward the ice (probably have almost faceplanted) hoping that their leg is higher… when it’s NOT!

Cuz NO, dropping your chest toward the ice is NOT❌ going to magically lift your leg!

Here’s the secret:
(bc you know I don’t gatekeep the secrets from my amazing online skating community)
✨You need to HINGE at your hips, push your hips BACK, and actively lift your free leg while lifting your chest up.

Having a strong skating leg + that push/pull balance of weight through ur free leg is KEY to a higher, stronger spiral!

In figure skating your body parts are doing different things but ALL AT THE SAME TIME! If that doesn’t happen, it doesn’t hit, & yes, that’s the tricky part but I believe in you, & I know you’ll get it!

Also, heyyyy👋 I’m Mary Beth Marley | Professional Figure Skating Coach former Team USA skater, 3x national medalist, & pro figure skating coach
Oh, & I’m GETTING MARRIED THIS WEEK💍

But fr, if you want a higher spiral, you need MORE than monotonous stretches…

You need REAL stretching that ACTIVATES & STRENGTHENS your muscles into positions that not only improve ur flexibility & overall mobility but,
ALSO TRANSFER TO YOUR SKILLS ON THE ICE⛸️

Which is EXACTLY what my
🔥Flawless Flexibility program does for determined figure skaters!

It combines stretching AND strength training developing a deeper range of motion AND the strength to control that deeper range too!

In just 6 weeks, you’ll build the
✨flexibility AND strength💪 needed to get that perfect higher spiral & don’t be surprised when that flexibility starts to show up in all areas of your skating either👀

I know you’re determined & ready to level up your spiral and finally have that WOW moment on the ice💪✨⛸️

Comment “MBM” and I’ll send you my off-ice programs that have helped hundreds of figure skaters build strength, flexibility, and control to bring onto the ice. 🤍

You landed it once? LOVE that for you.
Now let’s make it a skill you can count on!

Completing an element and doing it consistently are two VERY different things. These four habits help close that gap:

✨ 1. QUALITY REPETITIONS
Repeat → refine → repeat.
Give each attempt a purpose. What are you practicing AND what are you reinforcing?

🧠 2. CONSCIOUS CORRECTIONS
Notice → adjust → apply.
Knowing what went wrong is step one. Taking your coach’s correction into the NEXT attempt is where progress happens.

🔥 3. ADAPTABILITY
Isolate → connect → perform.
Work on the tricky part, put it back into the element, then practice it in your program. Your skills need to hold up beyond your favorite setup.

👀 4. PERFORMANCE AWARENESS
Track → analyze → improve.
Pay attention to what holds up, what changes, and what needs work. Your practice is giving you information. USE IT.

Because when the lesson ends, the real work begins. That’s when the athlete in you comes out to play.

Your coach teaches and guides you. YOU build the habits between lessons that help those corrections stick.

And that’s the secret sauce: purposeful practice on the ice, supported by strength, flexibility, and control off the ice.

We’re building your little figure skating bank skills you’ve practiced enough to trust when it’s time to show up and show out💅⛸️

Because skating is more than checking off elements. It’s feeling strong, beautiful, capable, and confident in what your body can do.

Comment “MBM” to get access to my off-ice programs and give that athlete in you a plan for the work between lessons🤍

Lesson 17: Backward Crossovers

Save this video for your next skating practice and to help you on your backward crossovers because backward crossovers are a staple and a fundamental skill that figure skaters perfect to great detail.

Backward crossovers look effortless… until you try them and you see they’re not.

Speed. Power. Strength. Coordination. Grace.
Yep, we’re asking for ALL of it.

Beautiful back crossovers connect jumps, spins, and choreography so seamlessly that you barely notice them.

But that “effortless” look?
There’s a whole lot of effort behind it.

In this video I walk you through the steps and stages.

The one thing I didn’t mention? PRACTICE it takes so much PRACTICE.

I see skaters get SO excited to learn these, then get discouraged when they realize they’re actually freaking hard.

Listen, the skaters you’re watching at the rink and on TV do these ALL. THE. TIME.

You’re learning something they’ve repeated thousands of times, been yelled at by their coaches thousands of times, so for real, give yourself time to build them up!

Already doing back crossovers? Watch the end for ways to improve them! A deeper breakdown is coming because we want power, precision, and a little bit of perfection

If you’re new here, heyyyy! I’m Mary Beth Marley | Professional Figure Skating Coach, a former Team USA skater and coach with almost 14 years of helping skaters reach their goals.

Welcome to my little online skating world!

Real advice, clear breakdowns, and off-ice programs to help you build strength, improve flexibility, and practice with purpose.

Comment “ANKLE” to get my Stronger Skater Ankles Workout + Hip Mobility Workout ⛸️🤍 Build strength and stability so you can feel secure on your edges, hold your positions, and check those landings with confidence.

Now let’s talk about knowing where your body actually IS👀

You’re throwing yourself into jumps and twisting into spins… but can you hold a continuous circle on a basic edge?

Body awareness starts HERE.

Try this:
✨ Forward inside edge → C-step → backward inside edge
✨ Keep following the same circle
✨ Notice your hips, shoulders, and weight over your skating foot

Simple? Yes. Mindless? Absolutely not! Remember, no one is too good to work on basic edges and basic awareness to help you lock in on the more advanced elements

When your alignment shifts, you’ll feel your edge or circle change. That’s your feedback! Pay attention, adjust, and learn to recognize what control feels like.

Going old school here but this is something figures taught so well: creating a pattern with your blade, tracing it, and knowing how your body affects it and I think that this generation of skaters will be the ones we see skaters lack that awareness that figure taught. But that is just my opinion. I’d love to see more of that attention in today’s skating.

And PLEASE give yourself a bigger circle than mine! I’m keeping this tight to fit the camera, and I can manage that deeper tighter edge. Use a hockey circle as a guide and give yourself room to practice with control.

Save this for your next skating practice. Your basics deserve the same focus as your big elements and goals🤍

Comment “ANKLE” and I’ll send both workouts right to your DMs!

Happy Thursday! Mary Beth Marley | Professional Figure Skating Coach

Lesson 16: How to do Forward Crossovers

Remember - the arm that is in front is the same arm as the leg you are crossing over

So if you are going clockwise 🔁 your left arm will be in front because your left leg will be crossing over

If you are going counterclockwise 🔄 then your right arm will be in front because your right leg will be crossing over

Those are the rule:)

It takes repetition, awareness, and constant determination to want to make them always just a little better

The best skaters constantly perfect their crossovers and skating - you are never too good for crossovers

Save this video because it has some great exercises and progressions for your forward crossover✨

3 steps or less, so you can spend more time actually practicing and less time thinking, “Wait… what foot am I on?!” 🫠

Because we’ve ALL seen it:
Wrong foot.
Wrong arm.
Wrong edge.
Finally do it right ONCE… then immediately forget what just happened.

Trust me, I get it😅🫶

Skating skills are a MUST and doing the edge exercises to build up those skating skills are a MUST.

But when you’re trying to remember an entire sequence, it’s hard to focus on the actual skill you’re working on.

So I’m making it a little easier:
✨ Short sequences
✨ A clear focus
✨ More time to repeat them until they click

These drills might be simple to remember, but there’s plenty to work on. Your edges, control, posture, and flow still need your attention

If you’re new here, heyyyy! I’m Mary Beth Marley | Professional Figure Skating Coach former Team USA skater, World Team member, 3x National Medalist, and full-time coach for almost 14 years⛸️🤍

I’m creating the resources I wish every skater had: helpful videos you can save, pull up at the rink, and actually USE.

Because showing up to practice is step one. Knowing what to work on when you get there?

That’s where we start making progress.

SAVE this video for your next practice, and tell me which drill you’re trying first⛸️✨
