I’m driving 4 hours this morning to the 3-day IHSA track meet. For the first time in 45 years I will not be in charge of a team.

The picture below is from the 1999 state meet. Dad was 63, I was 40.

Dad always said the state meet was his favorite weekend of the year. He loved track & field, loved my team, and he loved spending time with me. Every race was discussed.

Dad died at age 88. I’m now 67. I will hang out with my sons (age 39 & 33) high in the stands above the finish line, just like 1999.

Circle of life!

Interesting how times change. There are no longer 30-page programs because everything is online. Stop watches are rare due to automated timing. And… no one goes shirtless!

Just got a text from Coach Jacob Arnold that his Machesney Park Harlem 4x1 broke their school record tonight.

This comes 18 years (almost exactly) after Jacob anchored Plainfield North's 4x1 to a school and conference record.

Jacob is on the far left. So proud! ⚡️⚡️⚡️

This year we won our conference championship and qualified for the state true team meet. I also coach and do this with the football team. We were one game away from the state championship.”
