🇺🇸Fourth of July -not my favorite holiday. Mostly just because of others fireworks & my horses. Not always a good mix.
We spent the day working on the farm cutting pastures & grass and trying to keep all cool. Making sure the horses had what they needed to be comfortable inside while loud things were exploding around them outside.
I only share this post because I want people to be aware, because I don’t think some people are. I understand family and friends wanting to get together to have fun and celebrate. I hope they will also keep the farm owners around them in their thoughts when planning. Simply reaching out to your neighbors can possibly prevent a tragedy from happening. Horses are flight response animals. They can bust through a fence and be out on the main road killing an innocent family coming home from a long fun day in a second.
Horses are happier outside where they can move around in graze. Being in their stalls for 24 hours is not what any of us want for them, but we do it for safety. I’d love to watch & enjoy fireworks for once instead of sitting in the barn with the horses making sure they’re all okay. But my job is to take care of them, so that’s where you’ll find me.
Knowing if you were planning on setting off fireworks, or when you are possibly going to be finished, can help us plan our schedules for the horses. Knowing when and if we can safely turn them out later in the evening is a win for everyone.

Be safe out there friends

🌡️As the extreme heat is coming our way, here are some helpful reminders about a few Do’s and Don’ts of equine heat stress and stroke.

💧Providing additional al salt and electrolytes in feed is beneficial to replace what may be lost with sweating

🥵Heat stress can quickly turn to heat stroke, which can be deadly if action is not taken quickly. If you suspect your equine companion is under heat stress during this extreme weather, it’s important that you act quickly to check their vitals, cool down their body temperature, and alert your veterinarian so that they can provide further guidance or physically intervene if needed.

Here is a quick refresher of the normal ranges for TPR (temperature, pulse, and respiration rate). The typical ranges for adult horses are as follows:

🌡️ Temperature: 99.0-101.5°F
❤️ Heart rate: 28-40 beats/minute
🫁 Respiration rate: 12-16 breaths/minute

As always, your equine veterinarian remains your best resource. If you are concerned your horse is under heat stress, contact the clinic at 248-627-2815.

Here it’s a great read for anyone who may not understand why fireworks can be difficult for horse owners and farms with livestock.
Try to be considerate to the farms around you. If you’re planning on having a celebration, it’s very thoughtful to let them know about it (and maybe even the hours that you will be shooting off fireworks) so they can keep their animals safe.
