This is a “modern” Morgan horse, and I am using this photo to support something that I think is lost in the ways that many Morgans are shown.
DO NOT come on this post and make critical comments about saddle seat, knee action, any of that, because I will block you without a second thought. This is a very young child, and no negativity, none, or away you go for good. I shouldn’t have to say this.
IF a horse with this conformation had been trained as a young horse in dressage, he strikes me as a nice American made alternative to an imported European warmblood, smaller, probably easier to ride, a good dressage “shape,” and lots of quality for a far lower price.
There are Morgans in that 15 hand to 15.3 range that are built uphill, like this, attractive, like this, and friendly to deal with, a key attribute of the breed.
Many USA riders neither need nor feel all that comfortable on huge warmbloods with flamboyant gaits, whereas a pocket version like this might well be a better fit.
I don’t see Morgans as being grand prix horses, certainly not against 100 thousand dollar custom bred warmbloods, but more suited as good at training through 3rd, 4th level, which is where most USA riders actually compete.
There’s a saying about Morgans being the breed that “is hiding in plain sight.”
And there’s a reason for that, which is that many Morgan riders DO show saddle seat, which then creates a certain stereotype that discourages dressage riders from even considering one. And it becomes self fulfilling.
