Operating as usual
Floaties!!!! We get asked all the time about our thoughts and opinions about floaties, so here you go!! πππππ
1οΈβ£ Floaties create a false sense of security. π
Often children who rely on floaties THINK that they can swim when in actuality they cannot. They become overconfident in and around the water and become a bigger safety risk. I cannot tell you how many calls we get from parents who are desperate for their child to learn to swim now, because their child forgot they didnβt have their floaties on, went in the pool without them and there was a near drowning.
2οΈβ£ They create bad body position and most importantly bad head position that we have to fix later. π Floaties teach children to swim head up and in a vertical position which is actually a drowning position. Without floaties, a young child can not maintain a head up position for long before going under water. Which is why we teach them to swim with their face in the water.
3οΈβ£ It is impotatnt that children learn their boundaries. π There is no reason that a small child who cannot swim or is just learning to swim needs to be out in the middle of the pool by themselves. When first learning to swim, they are going to learn to swim to the wall holding their breath. They are going to learn how to get out if they fall in. And these skills are all taught near an edge. So, when swimming outside of swim lessons they should continue to stay near the wall as that is their current swimming ability. As they advance in their swimming, they will be able to swim farther distance and all over the pool on their own.
4οΈβ£ If you continue to put your child in floaties after they have learned to swim in swim lessons, you are unintentionally un-doing everything we have taught them; and possibly they will need to start over next summer. π Which of course we want you back next summer, but we want them to come back to learn NEW more advanced skills, not the same thing they did last summer!
In conclusion, unless you are on a boat, at a theme park that requires floaties or at some wild pool party where there are a lot of distractions, we donβt recommend floaties. Instead swim with your child and keep your eyes on them at all times. Let them explore what they are learning in class while you are watching to keep them safe. They may even start doing a little more on their own! π
Hope this was helpful! If you have any questions or would like to get your child in swim lessons, give us a call or shoot us a text! You can reach us at 352-394-3040!! π²

Sometimes learning to swim is not all sunshine and rainbows. βοΈπ In fact, often times, in the beginning there are lots of tears. π Which isnβt really fun for anybody. But, the good news is, that these tears DO NOT last forever. They DO go away!
We do a very specific routine in swim lessons, and as they get comfortable with the routine, and figure out what is coming next they will begin to relax. Soon they will be loving the pool and will be loving swim lessons!! β€οΈπ₯°π¦
Mom & Dad, you just have to hang in there and trust the process. Remember drowning is the leading cause of death for children under 5 in the state of Florida. So, they have to learn to swim for safety.
Once they are swimming and safe, the peace of mind you have is like no other. So, if your child is currently screaming through their whole lesson, your child is not the only one. It is pretty normal.
I hope this helps to encourage you and give you some peace of mind. And donβt worrry, we arenβt singling out a random child with this post. This is actually my daughter who is 18 mons. old. πAnd she hates her swim lessons. But, she is getting better and tears are decreasing. And we know that soon this phase will be over and she will be happily and safely swimming in the pool! π¦

Swim Diapers!! This is a reminder that if you are starting swim lessons with us and your child is under the age of 3οΈβ£ they will be required to wear a REUSABLE swim diaper! We DO NOT π« allow any DISPOSABLE swim diapers as they do not hold π© very well. π«
π¦
Below are photos of what IS allowed and what IS NOT allowed. I always recommend the i-play brand as that is what I have used with all my kids and I feel they work the best!
π¦
What you are looking for in a swim diaper is that they have elastic around the legs and waist and that they are tight. They will have thick cloth on the inside.
π¦
No disposable underneath! Just this and they can wear a swimsuit on top. ππ©±π©³
π¦
If they are under the age of 3οΈβ£ whether they are potty trained or not they need to wear this as we are VERY cautious about π© in the pool. If they are over the age of 3οΈβ£ and are not completely potty trained then they also need to wear a REUSABLE swim diaper.

Did you know that drowning is the leading cause of death for children ages 1-5 in the state of Florida?
With the number of drowning conversations that I have had these past few weeks, it has been on my heart to post about the topic. We have had so many calls to our office lately with parents in a panic because of a near drowning situation or because a child they knew or knew of drowned. Every time I have this conversation it gives me the chills and reminds me why we do what we do. This is the reason that all of us here at PoolSkool USA and swim teachers everywhere work tirelessly to teach children how to swim.
Drowning is fast and silent. It can happen in as little as 20-60 seconds. And it doesnβt always look like we would expect. Drowning is known as the silent killer. You often never hear a child call for help. And many times it happens with lots of people around.
In order to prevent drownings, it is important to have multiple layers of protection and to teach your child to swim. In Florida, we are surrounded by water, it is imperative that they learn how to swim and how to save themselves.
In an effort to continue to educate parents please share this post. This is a topic that is so important to continue talking about. And if you are reading this and need help getting your child water safe, give us a call. We would be happy to help! 352-394-3040

We hope everyone has a fun and safe Memorial Day weekend! We wanted to share a safety tip that our family uses at pool parties. The βWater Watcher!β
Unfortunately, drownings are the leading cause of death in the state of Florida for children under the age of 5. Often they happen not when nobody is around, but when everyone is around. When the number of distractions are increased.
Here is how the βWater Watcherβ worksβ¦ The adults at the party rotate being the one in charge of watching the water. While they are wearing the sign, they donβt talk to anyone, play on their phone or do anything other than watch the water. Of course the other parents at the pool should be watching their children as well, but this designated person is an EXTRA set of undistracted eyes. After 15 minutes or so, it rotates to another adult.
Remember drownings are silent. And you often never hear a person call for help.
During parties and when a lot is going on, people become distracted and donβt watch like they normally do. We hope this tip will help save a life. And please, if your child doesnβt already know how to swim, please enroll them in swim lessons so they can learn how to save themselves should a potential drowning situation occur.
