Interesting article about teaching kids to love sports.

The Long Odds Against Your Athletic Kid Turning Pro More than a quarter of parents in a recent poll say they hope their teens who play high school sports will become professional athletes. But sky-high parental expectations can have a dark side.

I helped out on the bench tonight with the '05 Jr. Jacks. Before the game I was lucky enough to help the goalie Michael put on his pads. We were playing those pesky Barons😀! Michael was so nervous he was shaking, the last time we played them he had a tough night.

This reminded me of game 7 of the '94 Stanley Cup finals. Vancouver Canucks goalie Kirk McLean said he was nervous before the game. NY Rangers goalie Mike Richter said he was excited. The Rangers went on to pull out a nail bitter and win the Cup.

I talked to Michael about turning that nervousness into some positive energy. When you start to feel nervous about a big game, turn those feelings into positive excitement to play. Your pre game routine should always include positive thoughts and visualization. What ever your position is, see yourself being successful. If your a goalie like Michael, think about making a big glove save or stopping a breakaway. If your a goal scorer like me. Lol! See the puck going in the back of the net and the red light going on.

Michael ended up playing a great game and in my mind was the player of the game in a tough 3-1 loss. Hopefully this will help some other players prepare for their future games.

Happy New Year!

Mike

Small groups, big results!

I am very excited to start my Pod training clinics. This is a great opportunity for me to continue working with the OHA players in small groups. I will only except 5 players per hour session. This is a great number. Small enough I can still give individual corrections and big enough to add some game situations.

I will be offering 3 types of clinics. Defense, Quick Feet/Edge Work and Hands (Shooting, Passing and Stickhandling). If you are interested in doing a private group, please email or call.

See you on the ice,

Mike

You want to be a better Hockey player?

It all starts with skating. The better skater you are, the easier the rest of the game becomes. I credit my hockey success to the hours of Power Skating I did as young player. I worked with Power Skating instructor 1 hour a week from the time I was 9-16. This is why I have a lot of passion for teaching Power Skating.

It takes a lot of focus, hard work and sweat to become a great skater. Not only will the OHA Staff and I teach proper skating techniques, we will also explain how every move translates into a game situation. Give a young player a end point goal and they will work a lot harder to get there.

When doing any kind of skills training, players need to be very selfish. Focus on themselves! It doesn't matter what the player next to you is or isn't doing. You need to get on the ice, push outside your comfort zone, and not be afraid to fall.

See you on the ice,

Mike

Last week was a very tough week for me. I know, I poured my heart and soul into OHA and helping our students reach their goals. I had no idea how much my staff and I meant to all the families that had come in for the last 8 years. Thank you for the kind words and support.

Now that the OHA Facility is closed, I am ready to get the next phase of OHA going! I have updated the website and added some fun features like photo/video of the week, Stars of the month, Hardest Workers and educational videos. I have changed scheduling software, this software will allow you to book multiple clinics for multiple players. I have also added Clinic, Camp and Pod Training dates.

Clinics - These will be held in Cleveland Hts. and Mentor. My main focus will be Power Skating and Checking Clinics. These will all be held in the evenings. dates and times are on website.

Training Camps - This year I was only able to get ice for one week long Training Camp. Next summer I am going to be offering at least 2 Cleveland Area Training Camps. This year I have put together a staff of 2 NHLers and myself for the camp. Please check website for more details.

Pod Training- I'm very excited to start these training sessions at the North Olmsted Studio Rink. Groups will be a maximum of 5 players and will be age specific. I will be running Defense, Quick Feet/Edge Work and Hands(Shooting, Passing and Stick Handling) training sessions. You are able to sign up as an individual for these sessions. I will also do private groups. Please contact me directly to schedule your private group.

There is a link on each of these pages to schedule.

Please note: Phone number has changed. Email and website are the same.

See you on the ice,

Mike

Hi Parents,

I wanted to write everyone personally to let you know that The OHA model will be changing effective April 30.

Effective April 30th, I will no longer be offering trainings at the OHA facility. For the last 8 years I've bonded with Northeast Ohio's Youth Hockey players and taken great pride in the impact we've had on so many kids. On a personal front, this is a very difficult business to run as it requires intense time in the evening and on weekends. With 3 daughters at critical ages and involved in so many activities, I want to be able to appreciate this time with them. Unfortunately, I can't have both.

Please know that I will make every attempt in April to schedule everyone that wants to come in to take advantage of remaining sessions.

I have no plans to walk away from Northeast Ohio Hockey...just a reduced presence for the next several years. Moving forward, it is my intention to offer various Group Clinics and Sessions at area rinks. Those will include Power Skating, Checking, and General Camps. For some of you, I'll be involved in training and development with your Youth Programs.

Thank you for 8 amazing years. I'm honored that you've trusted your children's hockey development with me and look forward to seeing you all around the rinks.

Sincerely,

Mike

Thanks Dennis for being a great coach and mentor to all the OHA students. You will be missed.
