Congrats to Aaron Henely for a great Bobcat Trail Marathon! Sub-5 hours is really good considering the gnarly terrain and singletrack. Definitely more than your typical 26.2... with Dr Suneel Apte, friend of the team!

Doan Creek Trail Ultramarthon was today in Shaker Heights. I only did the 25K but that was plenty! This “urban” ultra is all footpaths in and out of Doan Ravine (and In the Creek itself!). Teammate Kevin McCarrick attempted the 50K but only make it about 38 as he got taken out by a foot injury. I was 3rd Overall In 2:52. That’s over 10min per mile despite a pretty hard effort. Those trails are just THAT slow! Entry fees were donations to local charities and runners supplied the food for rest areas. Such a cool vibe! Check it out next year. But register early! It fills!

I made a last minute decision to run the River Run Half marathon instead of doing one last triathlon. Finished a little slower than I hoped (1:37:30). But guess is what happens when you do a half on a whim. I felt decent fitness from tri season but the legs were really heavy and dead feeling. Probably from so much cycling lately... Still it was a great event! Maybe another half before winter?!? - Mike Schaefer

Great racing at Vermilion Tri/Du this morning. And the traditional Quaker Steak and L**e brunch! Thanks to Kim and Matt Kimberly Huppe-Raplenovich for cheering, and Chris Park for Working Transition! Michael Schaefer was 3rd Overall in the Sprint Tri. Joe Bush and Kevin Kroll won the Male Relay and Team friends (prospective members?!) Kristen Gaba and Katelyn Heun won the Female Relay. Sara Ziemnik and Rick Beard placed in their age groups!

Day 2 of the USAT AG Nationals Tri had another trio of SSSMST guys racing - Rick Beard, Matt Raplenovich and Chris Schmauder! Many of the rest of us volunteered at our own team aid station! Congrats and thanks everyone! Especially spouses who also volunteered! Nicky Beard, Tricia Kevin McCarrick and Kelly Park, and our event team organizer Chris Park.

What a day at the USAT Age Group nationals! Chris Park, Patrick Kolosvary and Mike Schaefer represented and got great cheering from multiple teammates. CLE was impressive too. Congrats everyone! Tomorrow we have a SSSMT team-manned aid station on the run course.

It's the last Wednesday of the month! THIS week: The Spin group ride will include a Time Trial/Tri group and post-ride Food Truck Party. The Time Trial will be the same course/plan as previous years - Meet at Spin at 6:15 OR the Lagoons Picnic area at 7. We'll ride from Spin to the Lagoons, do 2 loops of individual TT (rider leaves every 30seconds, 11.6mi total). Then we'll regroup and ride back to Spin for the party! It's a non-competitive training ride, but it's a great way to test your fitness. Aero gear is encouraged but not required. Everyone welcome, ANY pace is ok.

I squeezed in a sprint Tri during my annual Wisconsin summer vaca. I wound up 4th OA and got one heck of a workout. Full report here:
They boated us to a beach on the opposite side of this nice little lake (a flotilla of nice volunteer boaters!) which was a first for me. But totally made sense so we didn’t have to swim into the sun! I was thinking, this is SO scenic! Rolling hills, pine trees, such perfect weather and friendly people. The run was to be on gravel roads and grassy trails in the lakeside city park, with ample breeze and partial shade. Certainly if God himself was a triathlete he’d be racing here. But I learned quickly that they race HARD here “way up North!” I hit the swim start aggressively but still wound up back 8-10places. (I bet the pools here are busy in the winter!). The lead swimmers cut the course a bit, and in swimming straight I got kicked and dunked few times and sucked down a bunch of water. (Thankfully it’s nice and clear!). Dealing with my extra “hydration” had me hyperventilating and claustrophobic, so I had to swim slow for a minute or get composure. T1 was good, then settled into 4th on the bike with the guy who eventually won the overall. We were really grinding up the multiple climbs, and on the downhills we FLEW! We almost caught the 2nd place guy, but after a slow T2 both of them were gone quickly! I opted to forgo the racing flats and took the extra time to tie on my regular running shoes due to the rough surface ahead. But I could still see the 3rd place guy most of the run and gained on him a lot during mile 2. Made up a minute or so but would have needed another mile to catch him. Still I pushed hard till the end cause they had 3 waves, so no telling who was close behind. Nice ice water-soaked towel at the finish. Kids race, picnic lunch, lotta back slapping and congrats from the nice Northwoods folks!). I love these people! I’ll look this race up again when planning next year’s trip. Bratwurst and beer anyone?!?
