Verbal abuse is when a person says things, privately or publicly, to shame or humiliate someone, or to make them feel scared or unsafe. This includes what they say and how they say it.


Examples include:
• Ridiculing or humiliating someone
• Criticizing their appearance, intelligence, s*xuality, religious beliefs, or ethnicity
• Criticizing their actions as a partner or parent
• Using cruel or abusive nicknames
• Swearing at someone
• Yelling or screaming at someone.

It can include things like:

Hitting,
Punching,
Kicking
Bashing
Shoving or
Pushing
Spitting on someone
Pulling Hair
Choking or Suffocating
Throwing things at or near someone
Using a weapon
Locking someone in or out of a space
Stopping someone from eating, sleeping or having the medication they need
Forcing someone to drink or take drugs.

Domestic violence and family violence is not only physical violence. It can be actions designed to control, threaten or harm someone. It can come in many forms. Domestic violence and family violence behaviors play out over time, to make someone feel fearful and unsafe.

Coercive control or controlling behavior
Coercive control is when a person hurts, scares or isolates another person to control them. This is domestic abuse and it can cause serious harm, even if there is no physical violence.

A person using coercive control can:

control who a person sees, what they wear and where they go
monitor or track what a person does
control a person's finances, medicine, food or exercise
criticize or blame a person, so they doubt themselves and their experiences
force someone to have s*x or do s*xual things.
People who experience coercive control may feel like:

they're walking on eggshells
they can’t disagree with the other person
it's difficult to say no.
