Silat Bledek USA

Yesterday, August 31, 2024, three of our members tested and demonstrated their understanding and proficiency with the complete Silat Bledek curriculum. They are now certified experts, recognized by the Gurus and by Maha Guru Bob Vanatta. It was a very rewarding day for all of us, and if you are Facebook friends with Tarn, Cannon, or Marcelo, reach out and congratulate them.

Folks, it has come to our attention that Joe Simonet, a fellow colleague and former student of our own Robert Vanatta, passed away. A few of us knew him personally and had opportunities to train with him. Our hearts go out to his family. Attached is an image I found of him on the cover of Inside Kung Fu Magazine.

This article came up on my feed as I was checking our page. It is a very nice explanation of the Indonesian kris, including history, traditions, mythology, and some images of beautiful examples. It is posted on the page of one, Kalpavriksha, and I tip my hat for the wonderful post.

We conducted a women's self defense workshop this weekend, by request, and enjoyed the opportunity! We feel good about the information and experiences we provided and hope our attendees had some fun while learning valuable life-saving concepts and methods. For our part, we did have fun (with a serious focus), and we took some notes concerning pace and rhythm for workshops in the future.

Curiously, when you have a "women's workshop" the only thing that makes it for women is the audience. The concepts and the methods are right for everyone.

Concepts explored include...
Fighting off an attacker without being a martial expert (of course);
Recognizing when an attack begins;
Learning that tools like pepper spray aren't any use unless they are already in our hands before the attack begins;
Learning how to play through danger scenarios before they occur so that we already have ideas what to do to avoid, prevent, or escape them (it's hard to think things through in an emergency);
Pros and cons of common self-defense weapons;
And, most importantly, how to plan ahead, think ahead, and use our heads not to get into danger in the first place.

Anyway, if requested, or when we feel the time is right, we will certainly do it again!
