Do you find yourself doing a stretch and feel like it's just not enough? Constantly rolling your IT band and still not getting results?

By just focusing on stretching our muscles, we are missing out on the importance of stretching our fascia. Just like muscles, fascia can also get injured from trauma, overuse, repetitive movement and poor posture. It will tighten which will cause a decrease in mobility and places tension on the surrounding muscles and ligaments, and leads to muscle strains and poor muscle control.

Fascia or connective tissue is made up of collagen and elastin. Traditional stretching only addresses the elastin. With age, restrictions and limitations, the collagen component solidifies and glues the tissues together. Because traditional stretching only addresses the elastin, like a rubber band the tissue will recoil back to whatever length it had been giving a temporary result. But fascial stretching allows you to lengthen and elongate the collagenous component of the tissue in addition to the elastin. This makes the stretches more effective, and the results will last longer.

Who wants happy feet?!

There are many causes of foot pain including injury, overuse, or inflammation in bones, tendons or ligaments. When your feet hurt, you hurt all over. The feet are the foundation of the body when standing, walking, running and jumping. Any misalignment of the feet results in compensation patterns that can affect the whole body.

Your foot pain may not be coming from your foot!

Yes, there may be small areas we need to address directly on your foot and ankle. However, most of your issues can actually stem from your calf and hamstrings that are swaddled in a huge matrix of fascia pulling in your body. Everything in the body is surrounded by fascia. It supports your muscles, bones, nerves and organs.

Fascia shortens as we live through life and puts pressure on our nervous and circulatory system. Even though the nervous system alerts us with a pain signal, we’ll continue to hobble around to compensate for the pain and create imbalance in our bodies. And in the case of plantar fasciitis and foot problems, we begin to get atrophy in the arch of our foot. The use of an arch support to fill the space under the arch can cause more atrophy, more instability and pain.

Stretching fascia is a very effective and safe technique for plantar fasciitis pain as it by targets tight connective tissue with a combination of compression and stretch.

Thigh Stretch.

One of my favorites.

This is a wonderful exercise for strengthening the legs and buttocks. It also develops control of the hips and spine. With the added assist of the the springs on the reformer you can get more range of motion and a deeper stretch.

We're missing a very important element when we stretch. Many of us stretch our muscles but are not aware of the benefits of stretching our connective tissue/fascia. Because fascia plays an essential role in the health and strength of our bodies, it is important to stretch our fascia to keep moving without aches and stiffness.

The beautiful and graceful movement of arm circles on the Reformer combines the use of the handles attached to the ropes and the resistance of the springs, which not only strengthens your shoulders but gives you a safe range of motion to keep stiffness and aches at bay.
