What a weekend at the 2026 Picktown Showdown!
We’re incredibly grateful for everyone who helped make this event such a success.
To our volunteers—thank you for stepping up and keeping everything running smoothly from start to finish. Your energy and willingness to help made a huge difference throughout the day.
To the nearly 900 competitors—thank you for bringing your best to the mat. The level of competition, sportsmanship, and Black Belt Attitude on display was outstanding. We are especially proud of our Elevate Martial Arts students for representing our school so well. It meant a lot to have you close out your 2025–2026 ATA tournament season with us.
To our judges—we appreciate your time, focus, and professionalism. Your fairness and leadership helped create a positive and memorable experience for every competitor.
To the Masters, high ranks, licensees, and special guests—thank you for your leadership and for helping elevate this event. A special thank you to Chief Master Betsy Stevens and Chief Master Jack Hornbuckle for traveling in and supporting the Picktown Showdown.

Today’s Tournament 101 topic is Tournament Etiquette and Procedures. ATA is an organization built on the foundation of Respect and Discipline. We can sum up our personal tournament philosophy in one statement: “Sometimes you win, sometimes you learn.”
The goal of competition should always be to win, but competing hard and with the best attitude possible is extremely important. Newer and first time competitors should focus on learning as much as possible about how competition works and how they can improve for the next one.
Not everyone in the ring will win 1st, 2nd, or 3rd place. There is always the possibility that a competitor will not earn a medal. This doesn’t mean that they did a poor job. Superbowl winning teams have some losses during the season. When you compete, you always learn more about yourself when you lose than when you win.
Here are a few tips to make sure you are using the proper ATA etiquette at the tournament:

For many new or inexperienced competitors, some of the terminology that we use can be confusing. Here are some common terms that we hope will help you better understand what is happening throughout the tournament!

We are less than a month away from the 2026
Picktown Showdown!!! We know that for many of you, tournaments are a regular occurrence, but for many, this may be your first exposure to the ATA tournament circuit. Over the next few weeks, we will be making some Tournament 101 posts to help make this event a fun experience. Check back frequently, share, tag friends, or comment below with any questions you would like answered. We can’t wait to see you at the end of April!
