Angela Stewart is running for re-election to the NEA Board of Directors. Please Vote for Angela Stewart at the May 2019 OEA Representative Assembly

PLATFORM: I believe education fosters opportunities, and I am insulted that outsiders would create policies that eliminate such opportunities for our students. At the February NEA Board of Directors’ meeting I saw educators from all over the country lobbying for fair and equitable programs and policies for public education. It can be overwhelming to consider all that needs to be changed in public

I attended NWOEA'S RA Thursday, April 14. I love that they do many drawings to encourage participation from their delegates. I wasn't able to attend EOEA's RA that same day, but a special thanks to Rita Walters who spoke on my behalf!

As Angela Stewart's campaign manager, candidate for NEA Director Seat #4, I would like to clear up some information that was in a recent post.

As you know, this is a contested and, possibly, contentious race for NEA Director #4. Being part of my responsibility as Angela's campaign manager, I have poured over the Labor-Management Acts of the last 80 years: The Wagner Act, The Taft-Hartley Act, and the Landrum-Griffin Act. The Wagner Act was definitely pro-labor, while the other two were pro-management.

The Landrum-Griffin Act, however, favors the union member in the area of the notion that the #4 seat be held only for a minority member. It states that any member in good standing cannot be prevented from running for any electable position (s)he wants. Indeed, historically, this seat has gone to a minority {a positive and progressive move}, but it cannot be legally held or reserved for just a minority candidate according to Landrum-Griffin.
Furthermore, a clause in the NEA Constitution & Bylaws states that if there is NO minority representation in seats 1, 2, or 3, then an effort will be made to have a minority run for seat #4. The rub, however, is that there is a Hispanic director in seat #2 and two of the three are female {considered a minority}, too. Therefore the point is actually moot.

As a person of Hispanic heritage, I fully understand the desire to maintain this seat for someone who is an ethnic minority; however, under the law, we, as members, cannot coerce, intimidate, or alienate a member in good standing {and with great credentials} like Angela Stewart from running for this position regardless of her race or ethnicity.
It's just plainly illegal...that is why it has always been "unwritten". - JLG
