The Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame mourns the passing of a true Cincinnati basketball titan, Coach Taylor “Tay” Baker, who passed away on Tuesday, September 29, at the age of 99. 🕊️🏀❤️

A Hamilton native, U.S. Army veteran, and beloved mentor, Coach Baker left an unmatched footprint across southwest Ohio hoops:

✨ National Champion Assistant: Helped guide Cincinnati to four Final Fours and back-to-back NCAA National Championships in 1961 & 1962. 🥇🥇

✨ Elite Eight Head Coach: Took over as UC head coach in 1965, capturing the Missouri Valley Conference title and reaching the Elite Eight in year one while compiling 125 career wins. 🔴🐾

✨ Turnaround at Xavier: Later led Xavier to its first winning season in 12 years, securing memorable upsets over top-15 programs. ⚔️

✨ Hall of Fame Legacy: UC Athletics Hall of Famer (1996) and honored alongside his 1965–66 Bearcats squad by the Ohio Basketball Hall of Fame.

✨ Shaping Future Referees: Serves as the OHSAA Director of Officiating Development for Basketball (since 2010) and has guided coaches and referees across Ohio as an OHSAA Basketball Rules Interpreter since 2005! 📋

✨ Dual-Sport Excellence: Beyond the hardwood, Dr. Morris has officiated high school football for over 40 years, worked in the Mid-American Conference (1997–2001), and served as a Big Ten Football back judge since 2002! 🏈

✨ OHSAA Officials Hall of Fame: Inducted in 2009 for his decades of service as an instructor, tournament observer, and longtime Putnam County League assigner. 🎖️

Diagnosed with Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Glioma (DIPG)—a rare and terminal pediatric brain tumor—Lauren refused to let cancer extinguish her passion. Her courage captivated and united the entire sports world:

✨ A Moment of Pure Magic: On November 2, 2014, a sold-out crowd of 10,250 fans packed Xavier’s Cintas Center and a national television audience tuned in to watch Mount St. Joseph open its season against Hiram College—a game moved forward and relocated so Lauren could achieve her dream! 🏟️📺

✨ Unforgettable Baskets: Lauren brought the sports world to tears and feet by scoring the very first and the final baskets of that historic game! 🎯

✨ True Grit: Despite fading health and losing functionality on her dominant side, she continued to battle—appearing in three more games against Bethany, Franklin, and Wooster, sinking a layup in every single contest! 👏

His collegiate playing career at the University of Dayton reached legendary heights during an era when the Flyers were a national powerhouse:

✨ Dayton Flyer Great: Led UD to the NIT Championship game and earned Tournament MVP honors at the prestigious University of Kentucky Invitational Tournament during an era when Dayton held the nation's #1 ranking! 🔴🔵

✨ Championship Foundations: After graduating in 1956, launched his head coaching journey at Elder High School in Cincinnati (1956–1962), building a disciplined foundation that propelled him into the collegiate ranks. 🟣⚪️️

Born in Hamilton, Ohio, on September 24, 1930, Jim was a cornerstone of Hamilton Catholic’s powerhouse 1948 squad, helping guide the team to a 27-2 record and an OHSAA Class A state runner-up finish before taking his talents to the University of Cincinnati! ☘️

The 6-foot-3 guard made an immediate impact for the Bearcats, becoming one of the most prolific perimeter scorers in early program history:

✨ 3-Time Leading Scorer: Led UC in scoring in each of his three varsity seasons, pouring in 1,146 points in 75 games (15.3 PPG)! 📈

✨ Conference Champion & MVP: Helped lead Cincinnati to the 1950–51 Mid-American Conference Championship, followed by team MVP honors as a senior in 1951–52 after pacing the Bearcats in both scoring and rebounding! 🏆
