God morning, my brothers and sisters…Frozen and snowed in Columbus, Ohio.
You know, this is the time of year when a lot of people feel the weight of the winter doldrums.
And I think part of the reason is this…
On January 1st, we start strong. Resolutions. Goals. Fresh starts.
There’s excitement… energy… expectation.
And then real life kicks in…winter has a way of magnifying that gap between what we expected and what actually happened
I hear it all the time from my own clients, and there’s a tone when they say it.
'I already failed.'
'I’m already off track.'
And when they say it…it sounds defeated.
No…no…no.
This is where I want to stop that thinking. Because what if you didn’t fail?
What if what you’re experiencing right now is feedback?
Bad habits showing themselves.
Old attitudes popping back up.
A cluttered mind asking to be cleared.
That’s not failure…that’s learning.
So today’s Friday Fly-By word is JOY. Let me explain, but first, it goes along with a verse I want to share. It comes from Colossians 2:14, and it says this…
'He canceled the record of the charges against us and took it away by nailing it to the cross.'
That verse reminds me of something important.
My debt was paid.
My shortcomings were covered.
It is done.
That doesn’t mean I’m perfect…it means I always know where to go when I fall short. I find great joy in that knowing. And the same truth applies to our work and our goals, because grace gives us permission to reassess instead of retreat.
I use this example a lot in the sales world.
Everyone knows prospecting and marketing matter.
Everyone agrees they’re critical.
But when you sit down with people and ask,
'Show me your actual plan…show me what’s on your calendar…'
Most can’t.
Not because they’re lazy.
Not because they’re afraid.
But because they don’t have clear direction…or a real plan…or clarity on what to do next.
Great goals without direction, plan or knowledge will always feel defeating.
So when January didn’t go the way you planned…
that’s not the end…that’s the invitation.
To reassess.
To adjust.
To build a better plan.
And here’s where the joy comes back in…
Your identity is not controlled by a calendar date.
Every day gets to be January 1st.
So don’t call these days doldrums.
Find the joy in learning.
Find the peace in resetting.
Draw the line…redraw it if you need to…and move forward.
That’s not failure.
That’s growth…and that's JOY!
God morning everyone…have a great weekend.
