Being aggressive in sports can lead to high reward. Often, young athletes have a problem understanding why or how be more aggressive.
🤔👟❓️
Here are a few tips to helping your athlete learn to be more aggressive:

1) Eliminate fear - young athletes fear failure, so they are prone to hesitate. Making mistakes is part of learning. If we focus too much on what went or could go wrong, we build hesitant, slow reacting athletes.

2) Positive reinforcement - as coaches and parents, we are quick to yell and point out what the athlete did incorrectly. As noted above, this type of communication can lead an athlete to play hesitant. Reward your child for what they did well. They most likely already understand what they did wrong. The best way to correct behavior is in practice.

3) Drills that require high effort - a lot of coaches get these wrong. Competition in coaching drills is great if the kids have the established behavior and confidence. In some cases, these drills only create more hesitancy and anxiety amongst athletes. There are tons of great drills that can be done with athletes that allow them personal success and growth without the fear of losing a race or drill.

4) A great coach - unfortunately, great coaches don't grow on trees. A great coach may serve well to one athlete but not another. This can be difficult to navigate. Saying that, young athletes need to learn to communicate with their coach. As parents, we need to give our kids the confidence to talk to the coaches about what they need to do to improve rather than quit or make excuses.

5) Improve skill development - confident athletes move faster and play without over-thinking. They are able to slow the game down and rise to the occasion. The stronger, the faster and more skilled your athlete becomes, the more they will make quick, aggressive decisions and actions.

How do you develop your young athlete into their absolute best?
💪🥇⬆️
1. Develop Discipline - This helps your athlete take responsibility for their actions. It's gives them ownership and the ability to manage their actions and feelings. If you have to constantly prod your athlete to work at their sport, they are not interested and have not developed the discipline necessary to have success.

2. Keep your athlete active - Athleticism, as a youth, is built by playing. Countless hours on the iPad or phone will be detrimental to them improving skills and developing confidence.

3. Train speed & agility - Young athletes start developing improper mechanics as soon as they start running. Although these patterns can be broken, it takes time to relearn proper movement. Agility, on the other hand, is trained by reaction (not ladder drills). Young athletes have to learn to react to the unknown, not a determined drill.

4. Strength Training - Contrary to popular belief, this should be done done by an adult, with a certification, and a college degree. There is no other argument. Strength training not only helps develop jumping and speed, but it can also help prevent injuries.

Sports are a great way for kids to have fun while staying fit. Sports also teach important life lessons like:

working as a team

learning how to be a good sport

overcoming challenges

controlling emotions

taking pride in accomplishments
🤝🏻👍😀
But it is not always easy to keep it together when it feels like winning and/or performance is everything. Help your young athlete keep a healthy attitude about sports and develop the tools to deal with the stress that comes with competing.
👀✋️⬇️
Youth Performance Academy helps young athletes improve at sports (being athletic) while also releasing the pressure that comes with their sports, ie. The parents, coaches, and peer group.

Your young athlete gets better without the mental cost.

Plyometrics for Youth Performance!
⛹️‍♂️🐇💨
What is plyometics, and what does it do?
⚡️💥🔑
Plyometric exercise engages your muscles in a rapid stretching and contracting cycle, which increases your muscle strength and efficiency.
🏁✅️👍
This results in enhanced performance, improved coordination, reduced injury risk, and reaction time.
🔥🚀👟
The key with plyometrics is how do we progress the exercises and what in what order?
🤔💭❓️
The good news is that the team at YPA has done all the research for you!!

We look forward to helping your young athlete reach their full potential!

How much is too much?
🤚🛑🚦
What the research says:

Higher training and playing volumes of greater than 16 hours per week significantly increases injury risk.

Food for thought: My kid is doing too much! Possibly? Maybe. Realistically? No. You just have your child doing too much of the same thing ⬇️
👟
Early sport specialisation leads to increased risk of injury and burnout.

Food for thought: Studies routinely suggest your athlete involves themselves in multiple activities. These athletes consistently have proved decreased injury rates, improved athletic performance, improved leadership skills and teamwork experience.
👟
No data is present to suggest that early specialization is needed to reach professional levels.

Food for thought: We get it. You want the best for your child. That is why we created YPA. The Youth Performance Academy is a program designed to help young athletes improve their overall performance in their chosen sport without exposing them to burnout or overuse. We also give your athlete the best possible chance to develop the skills necessary for this crucial developmental stage.
