The Cubs crawled ahead of the Ducks early, manufacturing four runs and holding the lead through the first half of the game. Cap City starter Garrett Davis finally got touched by the Ducks’ firepower in the sixth—for half a dozen. The two teams then traded runs, and the score sat at 7-5 Pickerington to start the eighth inning.

A defensive gamble and a late miscue in the Cubs outfield resulted in the widened lead, and the Pickerington bullpen slammed the door shut.

The Cubs never trailed, but the Phillies never made it easy. After falling behind 4-1, the Phils chipped their way back in and tied it at four. Cubs third baseman Tyler Etter then forced an errant throw on an infield hit and stole second base, allowing Dave Schart (2-4, 2B, 2 RBI) to drive him in and put Cap City back on top. A timely triple off the bat of Ryan Blessard squared it up again to force extras. In the top half of the tenth frame, Cubs catcher Will Davis launched a double off the left field wall, scoring two and giving Brock Wajda the chance to close the game out from the mound.

Best wishes to Phillies 3B Randy Skripac (broken collarbone) and Cubs C Max Dreisback (neck contusion) in their respective recoveries.

It was a tight game early between the Cubs and the Mustangs. Mustang starter Charlie Neel saw his command slip a bit in the middle innings, and the Cubs took advantage, notching a dozen walks and a dozen hits. Eleven different Cap City players scored runs.
