The truth is, returning to work after any leave of absence can be incredibly difficult. Give yourself time to settle back in unapologetically, and extend yourself some grace when it comes to readjusting. Before you know it, you will adjust a new routine – a new normal – and perhaps, with a little luck, shine brighter than ever before.

In retrospect, it was as if I imagined myself stepping up to the starting line of a race after graduation and was running as fast as I could toward the finish line. At some point along the way, I become incredibly fatigued. I also realized there was no finish line, and worse, there were no other runners. No one cared what job title I had or how much money I made; they were all running their own, personal races and likely had different goals. And even if our goals were the same, so what?

Lesson #3: The Type of Company You Work for Really Matter

Lessons Learned From Not Working: Part 2 - Being a Stay at Home Mom is Pretty Fantastic.
"In the end, life is a series of tradeoffs. In knowing this, I have chosen to live my life in seasons. I can indeed have it all, I just cannot have it all right now. For me, right now, I want to be a mom, and I feel fortunate I am in a position which allows me to do that all day, every day."

Lessons Learned from Not Working: Part 1.
"My point is that it is okay to change your mind. It is okay to quit. It is okay to not continue to invest in something. You need to remember that those are sunk costs — you cannot get back what you have lost — but continuing to invest in something you dislike will only cost you more than what you have already spent."

When I was working full-time, I used to day dream about what it would be like to not work for an indefinite period of time. The closest I came to that dream becoming a reality was my three-month maternity leave after I had my daughter, Claire. And I did indeed use that time much in that way I envisioned. I took Gretchen Rubin's advice and cleaned and sorted my way through every drawer and nook in the entire house. [ 539 more words ]

Dear HR Guru, I was just turned down for a full-time position I was clearly qualified to perform well. I had an initial telephone interview with the HR generalist, and three in-person interviews with this company (a non-profit social services agency specializing in caring for adults with developmental disabilities), including a meet-and-greet with staff, clients and tours of their adult daycare center and one of their residential facilities. An Insider's Guide to Salary & Compensation
Dear HR Guru, I am trying to understand what the different markets are paying these days. Can you recommend a website or resource where I can learn what the different pay scales are around the US? I’m unsure how my experience adds value. More specifically, each job I’d like to apply for says to be specific in my salary requirements and I have no idea how to value the duties they are looking to fill. [ 1295 more words. ]

What To Do When Your Friend Becomes Your Boss
Dear HR Guru, I have worked at my job for 4 years, side-by-side with my colleague Marc. We were the same position and he'd been with the organization about a year before I started. We hang out outside of work with a few other co-workers. He was just promoted to be my new boss. I didn't want the job - it's not about that - it's about taking him seriously now in this role.
