Tony Lema was born on February 25, 1934. Today would have been his 86th Birthday. After winning the Orange County Open in 1962, his first PGA Tour victory, Tony was given the nickname “Champagne Tony” after he celebrated his win by sharing champagne with the press. Following that victory, until his untimely death in 1966, Tony won 11 more PGA events, highlighted by his win in the 1964 British Open played on the Old Course at St. Andrews. We will never know how great his career would have been had he and his wife Betty not perished in that terrible plane crash on July 24, 1966. But we do know and appreciate the tremendous impact he made to golfers around the world despite his abbreviated career. So, may all golfers in their own way, make a “Toast to Tony” on what would have been his 86th Birthday.

Golfer Champagne Tony Lema was born 84 years ago today. Unfortunately, he was taken from us in 1966, at age 32. May he continue to rest in peace and always be a positive inspiration to all of us.
