Cumberland Falls State Resort Park

Wonderful weekend at the falls and resort. Hiking the area and Moonbow! We even spotted a Bald Eagle Sunday morning!
Trying to get back in shape, and get back to hiking! My daughter and I completed the hike to Eagle Falls on Black Friday. We created a medal for us to hang on wall with our picture at the Falls.
We are making plans to come down tomorrow, any particular areas, trails we should visit?
Great day to take in the falls.

Will the fire tower be open this weekend?
How are the colors there this wk? Wanting to come down over the weekend.

Stay with us, dine with us, and enjoy many recreational opportunities. We are currently operating on winter hours. Our Lodge and Restaurant are open to the public from Thursday at 4pm to Sunday at 2pm.

Cabins are open 7 days a week. Known as the "Niagara of the South," the 125-foot wide curtain of water is dramatic day or night. But it's only at night during a full moon that you can see the moonbow, a phenomenon not found anywhere else in the Western Hemisphere. Lodging: The solid hemlock beams and knotty pine paneling complement the massive stone fireplaces in historic DuPont Lodge, one of the most beautiful state park lodges. Fifty-one rooms offer beautiful views and full amenities including interior corridors. All rooms totally renovated in 2006. Relax on the beautiful, large observation deck overlooking the Cumberland River winding through the hillside. DuPont Lodge provides a spectacular spot for a wedding. Don’t forget about the park’s other accommodations, including Cumberland Falls cabin rentals, cottages and campsites.

Operating as usual

McCreary County Public Library

We have teamed up with McCreary County Library to bring you this art series. We hope it inspires you to get out your brushes and paints!

Are you all as excited about 2021 as we are!? Even though 2020 was a hard year there are still so many things to be grateful for. Teaming up with the University of the Cumberlands to pick up trash on the park is one thing that we are filled with gratitude for. Another is teaming up the division of Forestry to save our hemlock trees from being eaten by the wooly adelgid. Whatever you are grateful for in 2020, may we bring more of that into 2021!

We know Christmas is over, but who doesn't love Christmas stories. Ms. Olivia is here with another fun Christmas Story.

We hope these tiny "Christmas Trees" brighten your day.

This is one of the oldest plants on the planet being close to 400 million years old and it is still found in our forests today! It used to grow 100 feet tall however now it only grows a couple inches. Why is that? It is because there was more oxygen in the the atmosphere millions of years ago. It is called Club Moss, however it is actually not a moss but a fern. Happy Holidays to you and your family. We hope that this season is filled with many things big and small that bring you joy.

Winter is a great time of year to go hiking here at Cumberland Falls. The forest opens up making it possible to see through areas that are not visible with more vegitation. Come and check out the 20 miles of trails that we have here in the park!

Star Party Update!

Jupiter and Saturn will be the most visible tonight around 6pm. So we have updated our program to start at that time.

Join us for an evening of star gazing down by the waterfall area. We will discuss why you only see certain stars at certain times of the night as well as certain times of the year. We will also talk about a supper cool phenomenon that will occur on the winter solstice, December 21st 2020, where Saturn and Jupiter will align in the night sky. In the days leading up to the celestial event you will be able to see the planets getting closer. To put into perspective of how unusual this is, this hasn’t been visible since March 4th 1226 AD!

Meet us down by the gift shop area. Bring a pair of binoculars if you have some, it is amazing how much more you can see with them. And bundle up, it will be cold!

Photo taken in 1929 of Governor Sampson's visit to Cumberland Falls during an inspection for a plan to turn this area into a Hydro Electric Dam.

What a different place this would be if it was not preserved in its natural state. We have Thomas Colman DuPont to thank for that not happening. He made a promise to purchase the falls and the surrounding acreage when he found out about the plans for the construction of the dam. Unfortunately it took several years for the transaction to take place and he ended up dying before the sale was closed. His wife helped him keep his word and bought the property with the money from his estate and then donated it to the state of Kentucky.

Cumberland Falls officially became a state park on August 21st 1931.

We have teamed up with McCreary County Public Library to create a reading series! We have named the series Recreational Reading for 3 reasons. First, Olivia Immitt works in the Recreation Department here at Cumberland Falls. And third, because at the end of each book we will teach you how to create a craft related to the book. Come have some fun with us here in the woods during this edition of Recreational Reading.

Our Story

Established on August 21, 1931

Geologists estimate that the rock over which the Cumberland River plunges is about 250 million years old. Romantics are enchanted with the poetic beauty of the falls. Visitors are awed by the majesty of the falls. Historians note the uniqueness of the site.

Often called the “Niagara of the South,” Cumberland Falls has attracted the attention of countless people since prehistoric times. Although the first permanent, white settlers at Cumberland Falls did not arrive until 1850, people have inhabited this area for thousands of years. Native Americans lived here as long as 10,000 years ago. They made their home in rock shelters at the base of the cliffs that line the river. These people were primitive hunters living off the land. As early as 1650, Shawnee, Cherokee, Chickasaw, and the Creek nations visited often and used the areas for temporary hunting camps. Both Cumberland and Eagle Falls were held sacred by many Native Americans. Early maps show the Cumberland River was known as the Shawnee River.
