Turkey season is here, but a lot of what determines how many birds you’re seeing started weeks ago.

Coyotes and raccoons play a major role in turkey population decline, especially during nesting season.

Raccoons are one of the biggest nest predators. They’ll locate ground nests, eat eggs, and completely wipe out a clutch overnight. A single raccoon can destroy multiple nests in a small area.

Coyotes target both hens and poults. When hens are on nests, they’re vulnerable, and once poults hatch, they’re easy targets during those first few weeks.

This pressure adds up fast. Less successful hatches = fewer birds each season.

This coyote has mange, a skin disease caused by microscopic mites that burrow into the skin. Mange leads to hair loss, thickened and irritated skin, and open sores, often leaving animals weak and exposed to the elements.
