Saint Paul's School is bringing the sport of Quidditch into the spotlight, particularly for local high schools in the New Orleans metro area. Several Louisiana adult teams are mentoring us, eager to see the sport develop at the high school level, whereas most teams are at the collegiate level. At the club's inception, over 100 students had signed up, prompting the formation of four "houses" within
the school itself. Maintaining the Harry Potter theme, the five houses include: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Slytherin, and Ravenclaw, each fielding their own members and quidditch team to facilitate intramural play at Saint Paul's. This was fortunate, as no other local schools have teams (yet), so playing ourselves allowed us the chance to play and learn while introducing the game to others. Saint Paul's was selected as the sole recipient of US Quidditch's annual start-up grant in 2015, providing a full supply of all materials required to play (brooms excluded). With the school and student's support, we purchased our own brooms and jerseys, and are ready to begin playing! The only remaining obstacle was the aptly-named Title 9¾. This statute mandates that no more than four out of six players on the pitch can be of the same gender - so we looked down the street and found our friends at Saint Scholastica who were eager to join. The combined team now plays under the banner of Saint Paul's, but is as inclusive as ever, hoping to be ambassadors of the sport to any who are interested in learning. If you are from another school, and need help founding a club / team, please, let us know. We will be more than willing to help you get started!
