Captain Toney's Fishing Report - Fishing in the dead of winter can be a roller coaster ride of weather events that can turn the fish on or off just like a light switch. The tough days are during a cold front and the next few days after but when the wind switches around to the south us anglers are back in business. By now most game fish have acclimated to the winter fronts and are ready to move if it gets cold. For the in close fishing around the major creeks and rivers I tend to go back to the same spots where I caught them last. Those spots have one thing in common and its access to deep water, whether it be a hole, canal or dark water channel, it's where fish will ride out the cold nights until the sun warms the shallow edges. using a shallow running plug or soft plastic on the edges of the deep water will get the bite.
Other methods of finding warm water is to study the outside keys. Keys that run east and west have a south side that will block a cool north wind but also collect the southern sun in the protective coves. Dark bottom on a protective cove will be warm, the fish know it and you will to you may have to peel a layer of cloths off to cool down. These areas are often good for redfish and they will blend in by staying still, so slow going is the best bet and sometimes just staking out and being patient pays off. Live shrimp is the best bait, let the fish find it. Remember in cold water scent does not carry far. High incoming tide will be in the afternoon this weekend.

Started out a foggy morning. Not a breath of wind today.
I love days like these because you can see the fish moving water from a distance and then cast towards them . Angela and Rob reeled in some nice Reds by doing just that! She also picked up this nice sheepshead. We saw plenty more fish too but was not interested in eating.
They released 2 nice Trout as well that were right at 15.
Water temp has risen to 63 ! Yay! Warmer weather this week will help spike the bite!
They will be enjoying their Cook your catch at West 82 bar and Grill tonite!
I have openings this week, give me a call 352 4645554
"Happy New Year!"
The one that almost got away π€£
The bite was tough today. Since Christmas that water temp has dropped dramatically which pushes them way back in the creeks and makes them almost lethargic.
Today water temp rose up to 60 degrees. We had to work hard for these guys they managed to pull in a keeper red and keeper Trout.
They released 6 smaller reds and a baby Trout. All in all it was a beautiful day and lots of laughs with this crew. Thank you Kim, Forrest, Noah and Andrew! Had a great time with you all! Especially in the beginning when we chased the bobber around for 20 mins ππ€£!
Fishing should get better as the days go by with the weather warming back up! Let's go!

With an extended cold spell, I did see some dead snook, lady fish and mullet. Everything east of Hells Gate looked good and a few sheepshead, black drum, small reds, mangrove snapper and small snook bit on live shrimp. As the year comes to a close we are looking at some warm temperatures that will moderate the fishing and possibly push some trout back at the edge of the river mouths and deeper creeks. To get on the bite take your time and go to breakfast and let things warm up. Start by using live shrimp in the deeper holes in the river for black drum, redfish, sheepshead, mangrove snapper and trout. As the day warms move towards the Gulf and target the edges of deeper channels the are on the warm side of the sun with a dark bottom. Dark bottoms will heat up faster than open water especially when they are protected from the wind. A very good go to cold water trout bait is the MirrOlure MirrOdine.
With light winds it the bitter end to target gag grouper before New Year's Eve. My suggestion is around 25 to 30 feet with live pinfish and patience. Heading toward our full moon look for sheepshead to start hanging around the nearshore rocks. High profile rocks are the best to target and live shrimp is the best bait. Incoming tide will be in the morning this weekend. Happy New Year!

This fishing report is intended for the tough anglers out there who want to get out in some real Florida arctic. It may be better weather for duck hunting but with family coming in from out of state there is opportunity to go fishing on the Big Bend with drilling through ice. The hot spots will be the three spring fed rivers in Citrus County, the Crystal River, Homosassa and Chassahowitzka. These rivers keep consistent water 70 degree flowing from the springs and cold Gulf water will push game fish up our rivers. The tree lined banks protect from north winds and looking for these areas with wind protection and deep water will be the places to target. It's an easy bait to use if the Bait House have it and live shrimp is best. I use a 1/8th oz. jig head for my hook and I pinch the tail of the shrimp off, then thread it on tail first. Our rivers are very rocky so it's best to let the bait settle on the bottom, the take the slack out of the line. A fish will take off with it so you will feel the bite but if you slowly reel it across the bottom plan on losing some tackle.
Without getting in a boat there are a few bank fishing spots down Ozello Trail , Ft. Island Trail and the Barge Canal. Live shrimp is the best bait and the good thing about these bank fishing spots are that when you get cold a brisk walk to the heated vehicle is nice. Sometimes the fishing is good and sometimes its not but the cool thing is that you're fishing and spending time outdoors. Incoming tide is going to be late afternoon this weekend.

Crappie + Grunt = a tasty fish fry for this Colorado crew! They favored the pink jigs today! Water temp was 62 degrees! Thanks for the good times guys Enjoy! π
Todays trip with the Forrest crew kept just enough Trout for their cook your catch dinner this evening. Iam all about conservation and catch and release. I love it when my clients dont take more than what they need. π
Thank you guys for releasing the rest and I hope you enjoy your trout dinner, it looks delicious! π
Ended up being a Windy and chilly day on the H20 yesterday! We made the best of it staying out of the wind as much as we could. π Sheepsheads and grunts are what's for dinner for Tom and his grandkids! Had a great time with him and the girls!
Why does this ring so true?
Angler Catches a Rare Golden Crappie Holly Haddan recently caught a very rare golden crappie in her private pond. The coloring is caused by xanthochromism.
I had the pleasure of doing this photo shoot with Florida Sportsman magazine and Shallow Sport boats.
Let me just say that I've been around boats my entire life. Thanks to my parents. =).
With that said, I have rode and driven many boats. Never have I seen a boat perform like these. "I am so in love with these boats." Shallow water no problem, deep water no problem , choppy no problem. You would have to ride on one to understand what their capabilities are! Amazing!!
They wanted to take some pics me fishing the New Port Richey area. (Which I had never fished) on a negative tide too!"
In their boat!"
I put my fish thinking hat on and in literally the 30 minutes we had to fish I managed to pull in a nice flounder and some black drum and a nice Jack crevelle. Thank goodness! π
I had such a great time with them and there was a few times I was concerned of running a ground in less that 8 inches of water. This boat got it done!
The photo shoot was also a great success! Happy to be a part of this. Thanks again FL Sportman and Shallow Sportsman crew for making me a part of it π!

Did some investigating on the Chain of Lakes today. Crappie are still deep. Trolled several depths today 9 foot seems to be the key with the water temp at 70 degrees.
Decent sizes tho! π€
It's tough trying to avoid all the vegetation out there when trolling find the pockets and don't be afraid to drift over it more than once especially when you get one there's bound to be more!

We did some Spec scouting today! Overcast weather plus temp drops typically gets them schooling! It has just begun! 8 to 9 feet of water suspended is where we found em. Water temp was 72 degrees. As it drops they will move in shallower to spawn! Looking forward to this year's spec/crappie season!
