I've been successfully freelancing since 1984. I've been one of the premiere sports artists in Atlanta-also children's books and magazine art.
Happy ! A detail from some I did for a cover a few years ago. Reagan, FDR, and Abe sharing a laugh and a few drinks. I could actually see this happening.
It's ALWAYS Halloween for me. A Bela Lugosi piece I've been working on for a while now.
Cleaning up my desktop, I came across this portrait I started of Paul Newman as Cool Hand Luke. I have a ton of work like this that I do to stay sharp in between work for clients.
Christopher Lee...as The Prince of Darkness, Count Dracula.
An old of mine, but a favorite. John Belushi.
The world lost today. Gomer says "hey!"
A wonderful book I did all of the work for launches this Wednesday. It's entitled 'Understanding Charlie.' It's about a little boy with Asperger's Syndrome, a form of . This book means a great deal to me because I have a young relative who has Asperger's. My dedication to him is written in the front of the book. There will be a series of these books, each one featuring a central child with a different disability. I'm proud to be doing these books.
So, the ever laid back is now going to be the quarterback for the Miami Dolphins? My take on that development.
I'm determined to make 2017 my best year ever for my business. I've already attracted some new clients for the upcoming year. My work is always evolving and becoming better. It's not just about making more money...it's more about always learning and improving both my craft and my interaction with people.
This really sums up beautifully what it's like to be a illustrator or any other kind of :
Artists are some of the most driven, courageous people on the face of the earth. They deal with more day-to-day rejection in one year than most people do in a lifetime. Every day, artists face the financial challenge of living a freelance lifestyle, the disrespect of people who think they should get real jobs, and their own fear that they’ll never work again. Every day, they have to ignore the possibility that the vision they have dedicated their lives to is a pipe dream. With every role, they stretch themselves, emotionally and physically, risking criticism and judgment. With every passing year, many of them watch as the other people their age achieve the predictable milestones of normal life - the car, the family, the house, the nest egg. Why? Because artists are willing to give their entire lives to a moment - to that line, that laugh, that gesture, or that interpretation that will stir the audience’s soul. Artists are beings who have tasted life’s nectar in that crystal moment when they poured out their creative spirit and touched another’s heart. In that instant, they were as close to magic, God, and perfection as anyone could ever be. And in their own hearts, they know that to dedicate oneself to that moment is worth a thousand lifetimes. - David Ackert
