A MESSAGE FROM SEVEN SEAS YACHT CHARTERS.
September 28, 2017
The Comeback Continues. Twenty-two days post-Hurricane Irma we are seeing daily rainbows by way of positive news coming to us from every area of the Virgin Islands.
The Cyril E. King Airport on St. Thomas reopened to commercial flights today and there are plans to reopen St. Croix’s airport next week.
The Native Son and Road Town Fast Ferry resumed their daily schedule run between Road Town, Tortola, BVI and Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, USVI.
Premier and Minister of Tourism Dr. D Orlando Smith said, “One of the British Virgin Islands’ main economic pillars, the tourism industry, will reopen for business as early as November. Despite losses, charter companies are already working to ensure guests enjoy the sailing capital of the world this coming tourist season. By the end of November, at least one property had made it clear that they will have 120 boats in the water. I have no doubt that others will do the same.”
ARK, The Association of Reef Keepers, has been able to determine that the wreck of the RMS Rhone and some other sites were almost completely untouched by the hurricanes.
RMS Rhone - ARK
The BVI Tourist Board team visited Anegada and “were energized to see the recovery in full swing. There is damage but the island fared better than its neighbors. Relief supplies have begun to arrive daily and ferry services have resumed.” The team believes Anegada will be ready for Lobster Fest in November.
Need a beer and a burger on Tortola? No problem. Local establishments like The Watering Hole, The Chicken Bus, and Rudy's Bar are providing people with "a place to go" check emails, have a beer and meet with friends.
We have many reports that Foxy's, Soggy Dollar, The Willy T, Myett's, and many other fan favorites will be open for business by November or December. And as always the natural beauty of islands shimmers on in the water at The Baths, The Indians, The Caves and beautiful beaches.
Many of our bareboat companies plan to be reopened by December. These include BVI Yacht Charters, The Catamaran Company (mid-November), Dream Yacht Charters (November), Footloose, Horizon Yacht Charters, MarineMax, The Moorings, The Moorings Power, Navigare Yachting, Sunsail, TMM Charters, and Virgin Motor Yachts. Conch Charters, CYOA, and Voyage Charters plan to be up and running early 2018.
The majority of our Crewed Yachts fared well through both hurricanes and the crews are anxiously awaiting the day their yachts are once again filled with charter guests to cruise through the beautiful islands. Many yachts are now accepting reservations for charters as the gorgeous blue water, golden beaches, and newly refurbished establishments will soon be ready for enjoyment by welcomed guests.
In an email update, Virgin Motor Yachts said Only 1 day after the storm Nanny Cay had already ordered all new docks for the marina (which will be here in less than 4 weeks), power and water have been restored, and they have committed to hosting the large crewed yacht boat show in November. The surrounding islands that are visited mostly by tourists will recover quickly, foliage is already growing back, bars and restaurants have started to rebuild already so the forthcoming season will take place. We have also learned the first cruise ships will begin returning to Tortola in November.
Our hearts go out to all those affected by Irma and Maria; the residents who lost their homes, communities, and livelihoods, the crews, owners, and companies who lost their yachts, the local establishments and marinas that are working hard to clean up and repair for the upcoming season. We are honored to be a part of the rebuild by providing a way to help the economy by bringing tourism back to the people of our beautiful islands.
Please visit Hurricane Irma Relief to see many ways you can help make a difference to aide the people of the Virgin Islands.

This beautifully written piece by the editor of The Caribbean Journal was posted before Hurricane Maria also hit the Caribbean. The message remains the same however. "Come back and visit." Please read and share.

A MESSAGE FROM SEVEN SEAS YACHT CHARTERS:
Along with you, we at Seven Seas Yacht Charters have watched in disbelief as Hurricanes Irma and Maria, both “once in a century storms,” made direct hits on our beloved Virgin Islands and other islands of the Caribbean.
Many of you have already contributed directly to those most seriously affected - and we thank you for your efforts. Did you also know that when you take a sailing vacation, you contribute to the long-term economy, employment, and financial well-being of the country? These figures from the World Travel and Tourism Council (2013) are for the British Virgin Islands:
The direct contribution of travel and tourism to the Territory's GDP was US $274 million (27.0% of total GDP).
The total contribution of travel and tourism to GDP was US $780.8 million (76.9% of GDP).
Travel and tourism directly supported 3,300 jobs in the Territory (33.2% of total employment).
The best way for you to help the people and businesses who have provided you with memorable vacations is to visit them - and soon. So, we suggest you keep those cruising arrangements you’ve made. The sun, sand, and sea will be there when you arrive - and so will the yachts. Charter companies are working fast to repair or replace their fleets, many will be ready to go within weeks. Contact your Seven Seas broker now and they will be happy to accommodate you.
The people of the Caribbean are resilient and they will rebuild and endure. Virgin Island Sailing, a strong supporter and one of the leading yacht brokers in the islands for over 30 years, is committed to helping them do so.

AN UPDATE FROM SEVEN SEAS YACHT CHARTERS AND VIRGIN ISLAND SAILING:
The good news is that everyone we know is accounted for and safe, which is incredible considering Irma's winds topped at 260 mph and were consistent around 190 mph!
There is a lot of damage to homes and businesses across the USVI and BVI, but we are getting positive progress reports daily. The people of the BVI are coming together like always, showing their strong community bonds.
The BVI Government announced today that they do not expect a food, water or gas shortage. Marinas are starting to restore power and water - see Nanny Cay's verbatim update from today below. Some ATMs have reopened and local stores are starting to take credit cards again.
There are hugely successful grass roots efforts to get necessities, generators, building supplies, etc...some containers are already on the way. The outpouring of donations is amazing with great support from the British Government and celebrities like Kenny Chesney and Richard Branson.
Thank you to the hundreds of VISailing contacts who have asked how they can help with relief efforts. We have created a page on our website offering ways you can provide your support. We will keep it updated as more information becomes available.
So many people love and hold a special place for the Virgin Islands in their hearts. The intensity of the efforts will continue and soon everyone will have a safe place to stay and the supplies they need.
A ferry is now running between St. Thomas and Tortola. Tortola commercial flights started Monday and St. Thomas will be starting later this week.
Perrenial favorites like Foxy's, Ivan's, Soggy Dollar and similar have all pledged to rebuild and look forward to welcoming you back. Locations in Anegada, Pirate's Bight, Peter Island and Cooper Island are also rumored to be able to rebuild enough to open for business this charter season.
As many of you know we have a special relationship with Myetts in Cane Garden Bay. Right now, we don't have a timeline on Myetts restoration, but the majority of their buildings and the main bar is still standing. They've generously distributed any inventory to people in need and will let us know in the coming weeks when they'll be serving rum punches!
All bareboat charter companies sustained damage. The assessment process is still happening, but several will be operating again around November / December. Typically charters in October are being rescheduled to other locations (Bahamas, Antigua, Martinique, Guadeloupe, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Grenada are fine) or to future dates in the BVI. As of now, no 2018 charters will need to be canceled.
The crewed fleet fared better with the majority of crewed yachts safe with minimal or no damage - many also moved out of the BVI for the storm.
Your brokers are working hard to inform those with existing charters of the condition of boats and the islands as information becomes available. If your charter has been affected by Irma, we will be in touch with you as soon as possible.
Thank you. Stay tuned, stay positive...

We will be posting information on various groups we feel warrant your attention should you choose to donate to island relief efforts. Richard Branson's 'Virgin Unite' is one such group. Click here to go to their website http://bit.ly/2wUUTXW A description of their efforts in the BVI follows:
BVI COMMUNITY SUPPORT APPEAL
Hurricane Irma, the most powerful Atlantic Ocean hurricane in recorded history, has passed through the British Virgin Islands, the Caribbean and onto the US, leaving behind a trail of devastation.
We are only just beginning to understand the extent of the devastation caused, but will do whatever we can to support and assist our local community through this extremely testing time.
How can you help? Virgin will of course be doing as much as possible to support and assist our local community through this extremely testing time, but should you wish to support, we are working with Virgin Limited Edition and Unite BVI to support the local BVI communities in the medium to long-term.
They will be working with local organisations to identify the ongoing needs of individuals, families and communities affected by this disaster.
Our thoughts go out to everyone affected by the disaster elsewhere in the BVI, Caribbean and beyond.
Virgin Unite’s overheads are covered by Richard Branson and the Virgin Group, meaning that 100% of all donations received will go directly to helping support local BVI communities.
