Rooftop Tip: Upper Body Structure (Elbows) 💪

Your elbows play a critical role in upper body structure when shooting a pistol. They help manage recoil by acting like springs, allowing the gun to track and return consistently as the slide cycles to the rear and back into battery.

Elbows don’t need to be exaggerated in either direction. Flaring them out too much or driving them straight down can disrupt recoil control and consistency. The goal is balanced structure that supports the pistol while still allowing the upper body to absorb and manage movement efficiently.

Understanding how your elbows work with your grip and stance is a key part of building repeatable performance behind the gun.

Can you shoot accurately while moving, or only when you’re standing still?

📣FF102: Fundamental Foundations 102 with Andy Dang
📆Sunday, 01/18/2026 • 9 AM – 5 PM
📍 Rooftop Shooting Range

Most shooters can hit targets while standing still. Very few can do so while moving with purpose. 🚀

FF102 builds on everything from FF101 and puts it into motion. This course emphasizes balancing speed, accuracy, and efficiency—learning how to move into, through, and out of positions with control and confidence. 💪

🎯 What you’ll work on:
• Shooting on the move
• Efficient entries & exits
• Non-standard shooting positions
• Single-handed manipulations
• Transitions & movement control

Expect targeted coaching, structured repetitions, and real-world problem-solving. Movement is the missing link for many shooters—this course is designed to address it directly.

📦 Ammo: 500–700 rounds
⚙️ Gear: Pistol, magazines, belt, pouches, eye/ear protection
💡 Recommended: FF101 first — FF102 builds on it

Rooftop Tip: Grip Pressures

Grip pressure is one of the most misunderstood fundamentals in pistol shooting. There are general principles on how much pressure to apply and where to apply it, but the right mix depends on your pistol, your hand size, and your personal mechanics.

Most shooters place their grip pressure in the wrong areas and don’t apply enough pressure overall. That’s why recommends true exploration. You have to feel the gun, understand what your hands are doing, and learn how pressure changes your sight behavior and recoil management.

Dialing in grip pressure is one of the most critical skills for becoming a consistent pistol shooter. It cannot be learned from a single YouTube video. It’s experiential. It requires testing, feedback, and repetition.

If you want real-time coaching to refine your grip and build consistency, visit www.rooftopshooting.com to see upcoming Rooftop Shooting Academy classes. Come train with us and level up.

Rooftop Tip: Wrist Lock

Wrist lock is a key part of managing recoil and keeping the gun stable. It primarily applies to your dominant hand and gives you a stronger support structure behind the pistol. To create it, you’ll need to engage the forearm muscles, but be careful not to overdo it. A neutral wrist often gives the best blend of strength and mobility, and it may take some trial and error to find what works for you.

Your thumb placement can also add extra support and help the gun return more consistently, especially when shooting fast.

One of the most overlooked fundamentals in pistol shooting is stance. Shooters should prioritize an athletic stance when they’re behind the gun. Too often we see people standing flat footed, upright, and rigid — and that posture doesn’t help with recoil management or consistency. It makes it harder for the gun to settle back to its original position after every shot.

A strong stance gives you balance, stability, and control. It helps the gun return predictably, and it allows you to handle recoil with intention instead of reaction.

Tune in to see what Instructor Andy has to say about building an athletic shooting stance and why it matters more than most people realize.

We’re launching a new series of short training videos designed to help shooters sharpen their skills one focused topic at a time. Each clip breaks down a crucial skill from the same instructors who train our community every week at Rooftop.

Our first video covers a fundamental every shooter must master: gripping a pistol. A firm, consistent grip is the foundation of recoil control and is essential to shooting fast and accurately. The goal of this first Rooftop Tip is to help newer shooters understand the why behind a good grip and give experienced shooters a chance to refine what they’re already doing.

Whether you’re building confidence or chasing performance, these tips are made for you. Stay tuned and grow with us.
