Natural Light Photography
I would like to introduce myself to everyone that does not already know me. I am a former professional bull rider and retired in 2003. I began my photography career shortly after the loss of my mom in 2017. She left me her camera and although she was into shooting structures in large cities, I preferred a more country setting. So I began shooting mountains and rivers as well as wildlife. Even though I was enjoying getting away from “town” and into the wonders God had created for us, I was just not happy with what I was shooting. After all, instead of enjoying the wonders with my eyes, I was always looking at it through the lens of a camera. That’s no way to enjoy nature.
So I moved the camera into a world that has always been close to my heart. Some place I am comfortable at, a place I am surrounded by family (and yes it is a very large family), a place where there is always action, adventure, and a great group of people to just hang out with. A place that is always home, no matter what town or state it happens to be in. And above all a place where memories are made every second and I have the ability to capture those memories and that history as it is unfolding live right before everyone’s eyes. That place is a rodeo arena. From the smallest backyard practice pens, to rodeo finals. A moment in time most will never be able to relive as they were the ones in the middle of all the action.
Don’t get me wrong, just because I was a contestant didn’t immediately give me a hand up with a camera - it just made me more comfortable at an arena. I have attended Terri Abrahamsen’s Rodeo photography school more than once. She is a PRCA photographer and has been one for over 30 years. I am blessed she has stepped out to show the next generation of rodeo photographers what she has learned over her career. And with her being my mentor, I went from never photographing a full rodeo to being asked to be the Official Rodeo Photographer of the 2019 New Mexico Rodeo Association Finals in 4 months. I know this would never have been possible with our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, opening the doors he has opened.
So what is next for me? Well I have a couple of events left in 2019 and I am now booking rodeos for the 2020 Rodeo Season as well as working towards getting my PRCA card as well.
