Let’s talk about diet vs eating habits.

A diet is defined: a special course of food to which one restricts oneself, either to lose weight or for medical reasons.

I define eating habits as: the act of deliberately choosing what you eat by changing your mindset about food through educating yourself on what’s good, bad, or healthy for you.

This is important because diets are traditionally bad because they aren’t sustainable. Usually dieting is an unrealistic lifestyle change. There is no education when it comes to dieting. Someone just tells you eat this or that. Dieting usually wants you to restrict the consumptions of 1 or more of the 3 macros that the body needs to function. Dieting is short term. It’s like ponzi or pyramid scheme. Eventually your carb deficiency from something like a keto diet is going to catch up with you and will be worse off in the long run.

Eating habits are different because you are educating yourself on what’s actually in your food and why it is good or bad for you. This will ultimately transform your already “bad” eating habits into “good” eating habits because you are training your mind to habitually choose healthier options as default.

Habit is defined as: a settled or regular tendency or practice, especially one that is hard to give up.

Just by definitions alone, habit is a more sustainable than diet because habit is something that you are trained (consciously or sub-consciously) to do.

You can train your self to eat less junk food with “portion control”. You can learn to love healthier foods through education because you will understand that you can have great tasting “healthy” food too. Especially when you know your caloric limit and your macro goals.

As you train yourself to choose healthier food and not junk, nutrient deficient foods, the healthier foods becomes more enticing, and the junk food becomes less desirable.

Also, as these eating habits mature and you feel the difference in your body and mind, junk food almost becomes a second thought (or last thought) to all the healthier options to choose from.

Find your balance. Find your Fitnesse. Make your meals delicious and healthy. Educate yourself on what is actually good for you and what is actually bad for you. Then in return, your health, body, mind AND tastebuds will thank you for it.
