Texas Shotokan Karate Association テキスト松濤館空手協会 was established in July 1986 in Waco, Texas by James Melton 師範, 日本空手協会の六段。Kendrick Chumak 先生 reestablished the dojo in July 2021 in Allen, Texas. Ken Sensei has been training in JKA Shotokan Karate for 37 years, is a multiple time AAU Karate National Champion, and former member of the AAU Junior and Senior US National Teams with experience competing at a variety of WKC, WKF, and JKF International Taikai 国大会. He lived and trained in Okinawa, Japan from 2013-2017 and currently holds the following qualifications: 日本空手協会五段, JKA Class D Instructor, Examiner, Judge, and 国際伝統空手連盟 Class D Judge. Beginner Shotokan Karate (No Experience Required, No Rank - 9th Kyu)
Students will learn kihon, basic blocking, striking, punching, and kicking techniques, proper stances, and beginner level practice kata required for 10th Kyu and 9th Kyu ranks to include understanding of basic Japanese terminology, culture, and etiquette. Students under the age of 12 must be able to sit quietly in seiza for 3 minutes without fidgeting to demonstrate the discipline required to train.

Intermediate Shotokan Karate (8th Kyu - 1st Kyu)
Students will learn idou kihon, moving basics with will include a variety of blocking, punching, and kicking techniques in combination with coordinated lower body movement, a variety of kata increasing in difficulty according to rank, kihon kumite, traditional defense and counter attacking with an opponent working up to jiyu kumite, free fighting, kihon-based self-defense, and kata movement breakdown and interpretation of techniques for real world self-defense. Additionally, students will learn history, philosophy, and theory while continuing their study of Japanese terminology to develop a deeper understanding of proper technique.
