Broderick Rakestraw was an amazing man who excelled not only in academics and athletics, but who also set the standard for kindness and friendship. Born in the West Dallas Projects, Broderick made such an impression on his teachers, family, and friends that he was offered a scholarship to Lakehill Preparatory School, located in the affluent Lakewood neighborhood in East Dallas. Broderick brought a new dynamic to the school, teaching many of us about hard work, dedication, and sacrifice. He would get up at 4:30 a.m. every morning and ride several buses to make it to school on time. During football season he would not make it back to his home in West Dallas until after dark, only then to study for a few more hours. The Rakestraw Memorial Fund was established to ensure that other African-American students from lower socio-economic areas of Dallas can afford to attend Lakehill Preparatory, to continue the tradition of diversity, friendship, and dedication that Broderick taught us all. If you would like to make a donation to the fund, you can set everything up online at www.lakehillprep.org or mail a check to the school, Lakehill Preparatory 2720 Hillside Dr., Dallas, TX 75214. Please include a note to let the school know the donation is specifically for the Rakestraw Memorial Scholarship Fund.
