😩LIFE SKILL 4 - HANDLING MISTAKES!!

The number one reason people do not achieve their goals is their inability to handle the struggle…looking like an idiot, messing up, making mistakes! The way you manage mistakes predicts future success.

✅ Mistakes are training opportunities!

All too often, I hear athletes condemn themselves ‘I am a failure’ ‘I should just quit, I’m no good at this’ ….when all that happened was a mistake or off day.

✅ Parents help your athlete to shift out of identity statements degrading self or blaming others or blaming coaching. And help your child find corrections and problem solve. Assist your kids in figuring out the adjustment(s) to make at next practice or the game or competition.

🆘 Never ask, ‘what happened?’ as this puts the focus on blame rather than correction and improvement. They will sense disapproval or disappointment in you. Better to teach the life lesson of problem solving as a means to handling mistakes. This fosters mental toughness and strength!

😩 If your athlete melts down after a bad game, a mistake, or a poor test grade, this is a Life Skill needed = Cognitive and Emotional Regulation. Athletes are not born knowing how to handle frustration or embarrassment. They learn it!

😕 After a bad game, a parent can say ‘Tell me what you learned today.’

NOT REASSURANCE — ‘you did great’

🧐 What if what your athlete stunk? What do you say when your child does NOT give full effort? Gave up? Do not reassure by telling them it is okay, but help your athlete learn… Learning builds regulation!

😃👊🏻 Confidence or belief in ability to figure things out starts with regulating thoughts and managing emotions! Teach how to recover, not reassurance.

🍳 Life Skill 2 - Nutrition/Hydration Responsibility! This is another foundational life skill that DIRECTLY impacts mental health. Teaching this responsibility absolutely is a game changer for your athlete in managing any anxiety, depression, focus issues, mood swing issues, and athletic performance.

🥑 The brain needs a healthy fat such as avocado and a lean protein such as eggs every morning! Pick clean carbs like berries, veggies, and whole grains. Remove and eliminate processed carbs like most cereals, donuts, pastries, fast food sandwiches, fruit loaded sugary yogurts.

She worked with both my kids in two different sports, collegiate football and National level triathlete. Check out .gymnast.nutritionist specially for gymnasts. She knows the demands of this sport and how to fuel the body of a gymnast! Check out for her exchanges to more healthy clean options of your fav brands. She has great posts!

🥦 Eat Real Food!

🫐 Religiously, every morning I eat 2 eggs w spinach, 2 oz of turkey, red onion, avocado, berries, and sometimes a sourdough slice ! It is my favorite meal of the day!!

💧Hydrate with water and electrolytes! Aim for 80 oz/day spread throughout the day. Some athletes may need more. Avoid energy drinks, juices, sodas, fraps, and other chemically laden and high sugar liquids!

➡️ 🆘 We do not have a mental health crisis in this country. We have a life skills crisis! Let’s heal, get trained, get equipped and raise our kids with these skills!

👩 My Mama always said, ‘if you can read, you can cook’! She is right! (Don’t tell her I said that, lol 😉)

🛌💤💤 - Most athletes anxiety, depression, ADD/ADHD issues start right here with poor sleep!

🛌 Foundational life skill = Sleep Responsibility! Sleeping is mental training!

🛌 Youth athletes need 8-10 hours of quality sleep each night. Even school and college athletes need 7-10 depending on training, recovery, and growth spurts.

💤 Remove ALL electronics from the bedroom. Shut down digital input 30 minutes to an hour before shut eye. Stop eating at least two hours before sleep. Do not eat right before going to bed as your body goes work with digestion. Keep the room dark or use a sleep mask. Keep the room cool - 68 degrees!

💤 Sleep is crucial to athletic and academic focus, reaction time, mood stabilization, thought regulation, and muscle recovery!

👊🏻 Yes, sleep responsibility is mental training and a foundational life skill!

👊🏻 The real crisis…life skills crisis!! If we learned these next 14 life skills — taught our children these 14 life skills— we would not see the so called mental health crisis we are told we ‘have’ in this country!

🏈 Where do we find NFL talent?

We used to find it in all levels of football. That is changing now.

Fewer and fewer non-power-four conference guys are being invited to the Scouting Combine. 20% just a few year ago…this year, 5%.

The Supreme Court ruled 8-1 rules!

🤨 Absolutely mind-numbing that organizations in our field such as the actually believe this is a harmful decision. It is exactly the opposite! And it reveals how low our field has sunk. (As I’ve said before, we have a life skills crisis in this country NOT a mental health crisis).

➡️ The original ban essentially affirmed leading minors astray from science and reality while punishing therapists who tried to help clients with other methods of talk therapy—especially for clients who wished to live in alignment with their values but experienced confusion.

➡️ We are all AGAINST coercive and forceful therapy techniques. We are FOR helping clients who want it to LIVE in alignment with their values, Judeo-Christian moral system, science, and reality. This is a step in protecting that.
