Operating as usual

Hello everyone, I am in desperate need of your support. This is not dance related, but it’s about assisting others. My childhood friend Paddy is fighting for his life in South Africa. He needs a second operation and the hospital requires a down payment first...You may be surprised to learn that this is how hospitals work in other parts of the world.
Paddy has been outspoken about the abuse of women and children by the Cameroonian government’s army. He sacrificed his safety to fight for vulnerable people, and now he is the one who needs help. For some reason, there is no gofundme for him; I am not sure why this is the case, but I have been contacted by his loved ones to help. Unfortunately, I am not working at the moment and so, I am reaching out to you, my Saka Kizomba family. Any contribution from you will go a long way to assist my friend whose medical treatment is stalled because payment is due before treatment where he is. I will totally understand if you are unable to support at this time, however if you will like to support, please cash app $Sakakizomba. I will forward all money that is donated, and I will update the group on the total amount contributed with a screen shot of the transaction. I have added a picture of Paddy below. He is currently unconscious. Please make donations by Friday the 30th of October. Thank you in advance for your support.

Dance Teacher - Student Romance: Yay or Nay?

Are there ethical considerations to romantic relationships between dance instructors and adult students? Is there a power dynamic at play? Is consent all that is needed? What might be other ramifications of intimate connections on the dance scene between instructors and students? How does this affect individual experience and the dance scene culture at large? We will delve into these questions and more this Friday, at 7pm, LIVE on Facebook @SakaKizomba #kizomba #urbankiz

Friend of Saka Kizomba, Rui Djassi Moracén of Univetsity of Kizomba is brings a great series of classes led by Angolan instructors. Subscribe to the University of Kizomba page for tips, videos, events, interviews, information, reading lists and more!

!!! LA NEGRA CALIENTE !!!

Back in early July, we started an initiative whose main objective is to bring the most beloved and most respected Angolan musicians closer to the international kizomba community (esp. those fans and kizomba/semba enthusiasts who have no access to these artists on a regular basis).

Our first guest was the legendary Paulo Flores who graced us with his unique talent, contagious energy, and electrifying voice. Watch it here: https://bit.ly/3hTrF1D

On Saturday, we will have the huge pleasure to interview a lady who was part of the "As Gingas do Maculusso", the iconic girls-only band who made music that all generations of Angolans enjoyed for decades and still enjoy to this day.

After the Gingas' era, Patricia Faria (a.k.a. "La Negra Caliente") built a very successful solo career and she is now one of the very few female voices who remains focused on making mainly #semba music.

Tune in on Saturday (see times listed on the flyer) for the pre-party to be hosted here on our page by DJ Galo Super before the interview. And, of course, get your questions ready for the Q&A session so you can get to know more about the artist, the radio show host, the lawyer and the mother.

Consumption and Erasure of Blackness in Dance

Cultural Appreciation: Experiences of Non-African Kizomba Dancers in Angola

Tonight we will have an depth discussion with two committed and passionate non-African Kizomba dancers who made the voyage to Angola. We will discuss their experience immersing themselves in the dance and culture in its place of origin.

Araceli Castillo is one of the founders of the Dallas Kizomba scene, is an instructor, DJ and accomplished lead and follow. Araceli is known for her desire to bring true Kizomba technique to her instruction, and she is constantly acquiring the best Angolan music to play for the people. Follow her on Soundcloud! Antonio Lucero is also a long-time member and background supporter of the Dallas Kizomba scene, and he is a world traveler who took the time and opportunity to experience embedded Kizomba and Angola culture.

We will share music some tunes not frequently heard outside of Angola, and will show photos from the trip so you too can get a glimpse into their experience in Angola back in 2018.

Whether you are a Dallasite or a US based dancer, this show has something for you. Dallasites - do you know your ancestors? It's time to meet the people who had the initiative, courage, passion and commitment to create this scene from scratch. They trained to teach and figured out how to crate a space that people wanted to visit every single Thursday for 4 years in a row.

US Based dancers, we know many of you are trying to grow your scene and have heard about the high numbers and consistent gatherings of the Dallas community, this show will give you insight into what elements they put into place to make a community that suffered relatively few tensions between members and organizers, and allowed for communication around some difficult situations. It was a honeymoon time that we want to distill so you can take away ideas for reforming your own community in this time of social change.

Tune in to the Facebook Live broadcast tonight 7pm CST on the @sakakizomba homepage.

SAKA Kizomba USA

It's time for the Saka Kizomba Talkshow, a Facebook LIVE interview where Samy Vez and Shawndel Fraser will have a conversation with guest, Shika Jay. Join us on Friday, July 17th 7pm CST as we discuss the topic: "Successes and Challenges of a Black Woman Dancepreneur"

In the current context of an invigorated Black Lives Matter movement, the social dance scene has heard the emergence of previously silenced voices. Specifically within Kizomba, Black women have been expressing publicly their concerns and disappointments about some of their experiences and seemingly limited range of available opportunities within the Kizomba ecosystem. We asked Shika Jay to join us because she has had an interesting journey as a dancer turned dancepreneur. We thought it might be illuminating to highlight the journey and observations of a successful Black Woman Dancepreneur, the founder of the Annual OneKiz Festival held in Dallas, TX.
