QUAD State Bob Sandlin Tournament recap by Melvin Dunn:
Thomas Cambell Sr, is smiling from heaven.
I wanted to take a moment to share some highlights and insights from the recent Quad State Thomas Cambell Memorial Fishing Tournament held at Bob Sandlin. It was a truly special event, and I’m sure Thomas Cambell Sr is smiling from Heaven seeing the spirit and camaraderie among all the participants.
The excitement kicked off Friday night when 57 teams packed into Double C Outdoors for registration, filling the room with laughter and stories about the fantastic weather and impressive catches during practice. Afterward, everyone gathered at the Hampton for a complimentary meal, a lively raffle, and a review of the tournament rules. Many teams left buzzing with confidence, eager for the next day and boasting about the creel size limits.
As seasoned tournament anglers know, weather has a way of shaking things up on competition days. Day one started off chilly, with drizzle and temperatures in the 50s. The wind quickly intensified, shifting from a gentle southern breeze to a strong northern gust. But did these 57 teams give up? Not a chance! They showcased resilience, adapting to every challenge thrown their way. By the 3 pm weigh-in, 48 teams arrived with sacks in hand, and 17 teams boasted a kicker over four pounds. The competition was fierce, requiring at least a 14 lb minimum to break into the top five. Congratulations to KC Doyle and Robert Hawkins of the Bass Hookers, who brought in a remarkable 8.76-pound kicker to secure Big Bass honors for the day.
Day two threatened to be problematic with a potential fog delay, but thanks to a terrific call by tournament director Jimmy Brown, everything went smoothly. As the teams launched, conditions reversed completely—bluebird skies and gentle southern winds. While post-frontal weather can be tough on anglers, this group proved their skill once again. The 2 pm weigh-in saw several impressive bags between 10 and 15 lbs., but Chris Phillips and Mitchell Scott of the Metro Area Bass Club wowed the crowd with a stunning 19.26 lb. sack—a standout achievement anywhere in the country.
Special thanks go out to the surrounding counties for their warm hospitality and generous sponsorship. We especially appreciate Double C Outdoors, Vaughn Catfish, Hampton Inn, Quality Inn, Sure Stay Inn, Kistler Rods, Ark Rods, and Victor Hawkins, as well as all those who contributed to making this event memorable.

Hello Quad State Family,
I hope this message finds you well and ready for another exciting chapter in our club’s history. As we look ahead to 2026, I want to take a moment to reflect on the remarkable legacy of Thomas Cambell Sr. Back in 1993, Thomas Sr had a vision—to expand the fellowship, competitive fishing opportunities, and family involvement within our local fishing clubs.
Through weeks of spirited conversations and meticulous planning with the presidents of various bass clubs, the Quad State Bass Club Association was born. Originally uniting clubs from Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Oklahoma, we have since welcomed Missouri into our ranks.
Our very first event was held on April 17, 1993, at Bob Sandlin Reservoir. The excitement was palpable—20 teams turned out, eager for a shot at $1,500 in prize money for a modest $125 entry fee. The boat ramp overflowed with anglers sporting new hats, shirts, and decals, while families cheered from the parking lot. That day marked the birth of a new era, defined by professionalism and camaraderie. Thomas insisted on a quality event, complete with a mandatory pre-tournament meeting to review rules and boundaries, and a structured process for boat numbers and weigh-ins. Victor Hawkins and Dr. Don Perry claimed championship honors at our inaugural event, setting the tone for over 32 Quad State tournaments across five states, with prizes ranging from $1,500 to $4,500 per day.
Though Thomas Cambell Sr transitioned in 2025, his impact continues to inspire us. In 2026, we’ll return to where it all began—Lake Bob Sandlin—for a highly anticipated event that could easily see over 100 boats. We’re encouraging every club member to join us in celebrating Thomas’s vision and helping it flourish beyond his greatest expectations.
These gathering promises something special for everyone, especially the youth in our families. It’s a fantastic opportunity for them to experience the fun, fellowship, and excitement that makes our community so vibrant. The top prize for this two-day event is $5,000, so mark your calendars and start preparing! Here’s how you can participate:
- Renew your membership with any of the participating clubs.
- Book the event on your calendar now, so don’t miss out.
- Take advantage of Quad State discounts at participating hotels or check out the many Airbnb’s and cabins in the local communities surrounding Lake Bob Sandlin for a comfortable stay with your loved ones.
Let’s make the 2026 event something extraordinary—a celebration that honors Thomas Cambell’s vision and brings our community together like never before. If you have any questions or need information on club membership, accommodation, or event details, feel free to reach out to Officers of Quad State. We look forward to seeing all of you at Lake Bob Sandlin for a weekend of friendship, competition, and lasting memories.
