The New York Police Department is working with the Department of Defense to further crack down on illegal guns in the city by researching technology that could detect concealed weapons on people as they walk down the street.

Infrared rays would scan a “form of radiation emitted from the body” on a person carrying a gun on the city’s streets, New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said Tuesday at a State of the NYPD event, the New York Post reports

In October of 1996, the Department of Safety began issuing handgun carry permits pursuant to Public Chapter 905. Prior to this change, handgun carry permits were issued by local sheriff's offices. Since October 1996, the Department of Safety has issued more than 339,000 handgun carry permits.

The decision will be hailed by gun rights advocates and comes over the opposition of gun control groups, the city of Chicago and four justices.Justice Samuel Alito wrote for the five justice majority saying "the right to keep and bear arms must be regarded as a substantive guarantee, not a prohibition that could be ignored so long as the States legislated in an evenhanded manner." In its second major ruling on gun rights in three years, the Supreme Court Monday extended the federally protected right to keep and bear arms to all 50 states. From Fox News

House Bill 770, sponsored by State Representative Mike Turner (D-51), allows law-abiding permit holders to carry of a firearm for self-defense during the bow-hunting season. State Senator Doug Jackson (D-25) carried the companion legislation, Senate Bill 842. HB 770 goes into effect July 1.------ Info from the NRA------

House Bill 2376, authored by State Representative David Shepard (D-69) and State Senator Doug Jackson (D-25), prohibits the destruction of confiscated fi****ms and requires them to be auctioned off or sold to a federally licensed fi****ms dealer.
