THROWBACK: Here's a throwback story. One of my Black Belts (Sensei Tony) was stationed in Okinawa some years back and got invited (after having to try out) to train at one of the oldest Dojos there. A nice testament to the quality of the training we teach here at our Dojo.

Our newest self defense testimonial. From yesterday.

A good self defense success. Barehanded vs an attacker with. 15LB wrench.
Chris looks small in the pic but he’s 6’3” and around 190LBs. That’s a large guy he’s got in a lock on the ground.

SELF DEFENSE TESTIMONIALS: All of our students who have needed to use their skills have been 💯% successful.

Dania Beach Florida: STREET EFFECTIVE MARTIAL SKILLS FOR SELF DEFENSE: At our Dojo we teach proven effective, street functional martial arts skills.

_____________________________

(NOTE: Self defense ability is a VERY important skill to have. You see in the news what craziness & violence is going on out there every day.

There are lots of people (especially online) who believe they KNOW what works (or doesn’t work) in street self defense vs. an attacker.

They generally don’t.

They took some MMA classes or did some sport Karate/Taekwondo as a kid. Maybe they got in some bar fights and “won” -so they feel they know about self-defense. Or they are just one of those people who just constantly talks BS.

And a lot of those people will VERY CONFIDENTLY give YOU advice about what you should do when YOUR life is on the line.

-Especially (& notoriously) in online comment sections. The “always wrong, never in doubt” crowd. Lol.

And MANY of those people DO NOT know what they are talking about.

AT ALL.

If you listen to them you are betting YOUR life on THEIR opinion.

You’d be smart, if you have decided handle your self-defense needs, to treat it like you would if you were getting help with any serious life and death issue -and find the BEST person available.

Look for a school that has a long record of successfully teaching regular people self defense.

“Successful” = the people they trained were able to protect themselves in real life when they got attacked.

And even better that the people they trained have learned to be aware and avoid situations. Or just don’t look to be inviting victims anymore so criminals tend to pass on going at them.

If you were vetting a surgeon for someone you would ask: how LONG have they been practicing? How MANY TIME have they done this procedure? How SUCCESSFUL were their outcomes?

Self-defense is also a serious subject. If your defense fails you are in trouble. Possibly badly hurt. In the hospital for 3 months. Maybe dead.

You should look for a teacher who has a LOT of experience and a VERY long track record of SUCCESSFULLY teaching REGULAR people to be able to defend themselves.

I’d recommend at least 15+ years and many 100s of students and a VERY high percentage of their self defense skills working in real situations.

Have they taken people who had no real martial arts or fight experience (and aren’t a high-level athlete) and taught them how to protect themselves?

Our school has been successfully been teaching self-defense focused, martial arts (“war arts”) in Florida for 30+ years. (And 10+ years before that teaching up in New England). I’ve been in the Arts since the late 70s.

At our school we have taught 1000s of students over that time. A percentage of those students have had to use their self defense skills. To date ALL of our students who were attacked have been successful defending themselves.

If people think that they know about actual self-defense, that’s fine, but let them risk their OWN safety on their opinion. If/when they develop a very long track record of successfully teaching others -then look into them.

Back in June, Jay, one of our old students, was working down in Key West and came out to 4 guys breaking into his truck. The all immediately attacked him. He was able to hold his own against them and do enough damage that they quickly lost interest in continuing.

During the pandemic, one of our students, Brian, was working a charity thing for his church, and ended up getting attacked by this gang member. They were face to face, things went south, and the guy pulled a gun to shoot him.
Brian was able to use one of the gun defenses we teach to redirect the gun, control the arm and smash the guy into the wall and put him down and disarm the guy.

We have dozens of these successful self defense testimonials (a bunch below in the comments).

That is why we are very CONFIDENT in our abilities to teach people, and that our choice of techniques, strategy and tactics is most effective for self defense. The best way to find out if someone can do something is if they have ALREADY been doing it successfully.

If a teacher or a school (or some random guy with an online opinion) doesn’t have a similar record of success in real self defense situations (and your goal is having real skills) then pass on them.

And most old school, serious martial artists never bother arguing with the online forum crowd or the snarky comments crew. That’s silly kids stuff. And not a group of people I would take important advice from. On anything.

I’ve been in martial arts for over 45 years. I teach the techniques and concepts that I teach because they have proven themselves effective. If I find a technique that works better than what we are currently using then we will adjust and use the better technique.

Beyond that we use the fighting arts as a medium for personal growth/transformation, for the “Dojo Brotherhood” and the fun of the training and skills.

If you want to compete in the ring in MMA, or if you are looking for a good kids, karate school, then look elsewhere for a school that successfully does THOSE things.

Self-defense is different.

___________________________

We have our students practice using realistic fight scenarios so they develop the skills needed to defend vs the type of attacks that actually happen. We do hands on training. We don’t just kick heavy bags. We don’t do preset movement patterns (Kata).

We do multiple attacker fighting drills. We do weapons fighting (focusing on using & defending real weapons you could face -knives, sticks, close range pistol etc. Not nunchucks and tonfa). We do spontaneous self defense. Realistic locks, throws, chokes etc.

We focus on realistic situations.

If you have 2 attackers coming at you what are your options? What’s the optimal way of defending yourself that gives you the highest probability of not getting injured or worse? What would you do if a guy pulls a gun on you and you believe he plans on using it? If you’re at a gas station and a guy tries to sucker punch you how do you handle it?

We teach our students to know how to handle those type of situations and they have successfully dealt with the scenarios above and many others.

If you are interested in learning or expanding your self-defense abilities, you would be wise to look for a school that has a proven track record of success of teaching regular people self-defense that has ACTUALLY worked in real life. Find a school that has successively taken someone with no training (who is not a top level athlete) and has given them functional self-defense abilities.

To date ALL of our students that have needed to defend themselves have been 💯% successful. We have dozens of testimonials from our students. Some are posted in the comments. The Dojo has been in South Florida since 1992. So we have a track record of self defense success that goes back over 30 years.

We haven’t heard of any other local martial arts schools who have a similar record of success in actual self defense.

Usually schools highlight their best competitors sport MMA record. Or kids schools highlight the positive strides the kids have made (confidence, grades).

And if your goal is to go and compete successfully in MMA tournaments, then you should look for a school that has a really good track record of creating good sport martial arts fighters that win tournaments.

If you’re looking for a school to teach your kid some confidence and self discipline then look for a school that’s successfully taught kids that.

Most martial arts schools don’t actually focus on defending vs real street attacks.
Schools commonly teach martial sports, MMA fighting in rings, kids karate etc.

We don’t train for competing in tournaments or doing those cool, acrobatic(but non functional) skills like you see in movies.

There’s nothing wrong with training in martial sports/MMA if you like it, but it doesn’t work very well in real life self-defense fights. (Unless the attacker will agree to square up with you so you can have a street fight).

It definitely doesn’t work if the attacker has a weapon or there are 3 of them. Or if they attack you in a way that is fundamentally different than what your martial sport trains in. (EX: a wrestler/BJJ guy facing an attacker with a knife, a sport Karate student on the ground, etc).

We have a very strong track record of teaching skills that have consistently worked in real self defense situations. (See our many student testimonials on our website). If you want to learn self defense skills, it’s smart to learn from a school that has successfully taught those skills.

Remember that violence in real life is NOT an MMA match in a ring.

Real violence is a sudden attack from a person who is probably much bigger/stronger than you or it’s multiple attackers or someone with a knife or gun. It happens when you are not ready. There are no rules and no ref. Our students have successfully defended themselves vs all of those types of attacks.

The good news is you are NOT likely to be fighting a trained martial arts fighter if you get attacked. It’s more likely to just be some angry drunk/high guy or a petty street criminal. They are dangerous if you don’t know how to defend yourself and they target you. But they are not particularly skilled fighters.

Obviously, your best strategy is to avoid these situations BUT if you end up getting attacked the only thing that’s going to protect you is your fighting skills.

If you don’t have those skills (and don’t want to keep walking around not knowing how to expertly defend yourself) then do something about it and TAKE ACTION and come and learn.

We are an all adult school. (Most students are 30s-60s). Message us or call/text to learn more.
