An Important Message About Our Kids Fun Run
As Race Director of the Three Sisters Marathon, I want to personally address what happened during Friday evening’s Kids Fun Run.
Our children were supposed to run a one-mile out-and-back course, turning around at the half-mile point. Unfortunately, the turnaround did not happen as planned, and a number of our children continued well beyond that point before being redirected.
That should not have happened, and I am deeply sorry.
I especially want to apologize to the parents who entrusted us with their children after being told where they would turn around and how far they would run. I completely understand the concern and fear you may have experienced when your child did not return when expected.
While we had adult volunteers positioned along the trail, our procedures at the designated turnaround point were not sufficient to prevent this mistake. As Race Director, I take full responsibility for making sure those procedures are clear and that appropriate safeguards are in place.
We are reviewing exactly what happened and, should we hold the Kids Fun Run again, there will be changes. The turnaround point will be unmistakably marked and secured, responsibilities will be clearly confirmed before the start, and we will have additional safeguards so that children cannot continue beyond the designated course.
I am incredibly grateful that our children returned safely, but I also recognize that a good outcome does not erase the seriousness of what happened or the concern it caused their families.
Three Sisters Marathon was created to encourage people, celebrate our community, and provide a safe and positive race experience. We fell short of that standard during this portion of Friday evening’s event, and I sincerely apologize.
To the parents who have reached out: thank you. Your concerns are heard, they are valid, and they will help us do better.
