We embarked on a mission for a TT sanctioned plan for US-based children of Trinidad and Tobago heritage. Broward Chapter - How "We" started?

Mission: "every potential player should have an opportunity to be showcased". Lesley-Ann Chan Tack and Nisha Corbie (both involved parents in the South Florida soccer community) were talking about Soccer Tryouts for the upcoming season and the different options of local clubs and opportunities for their own sons, and then chatted about the North American Combine that was being held in Washington,

DC for Trinidad and Tobago (TT) U20 boys. What came to mind immediately was that
1) there was a cost involved to attend that event, so that may exclude local talent who had no way or means of going out of state
2) it didn’t factor in the younger age groups, into which we need to tap to establish a solid pathway

We in Broward (Florida) then set out on a collective mission to find out who we needed to contact to try and make this happen here in South Florida, specifically a Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) tryout for national teams for US-based children of Trinidad and Tobago heritage. We then reached out to Technical Director (Anis Jerbi-Tunisia born) and Head coach U12 academy (Jason Ford - Trinidadian) to see what their thoughts were on the mission we wanted to accomplish.... which was "every potential player should have an opportunity to be showcased on a national platform at no cost to him/her".... the coaches very quickly were on board and so we reached out to the TTFA and developed a plan to piggyback off the already-planned event in DC. We subsequently submitted a letter to the TTFA normalization committee and obtained permission to proceed, with the understanding that this event will be completely funded by us (in South Florida). A structured player database and registration form was built, and we launched into calling qualified and talented players up to our inaugural, sanctioned TTFA Broward combine, based on recommendations from coaches, scouts, and agents. We finalized a 2-day event to facilitate this Combine, for which we invited and accommodated TTFA 1st Assistant Coach Reynold Carrington and manager Major Basil Thompson. We reached out to our community quickly looking for sponsors and we received some strong support initially, so we are truly hoping that sponsorship will continue as we expand, making this into an ongoing viable initiative, while keeping our local TT soccer culture tight knit. Our Florida Committee then contacted the Consul General's office to initiate a process of acquiring/expediting TT passports for potential TTFA selections, knowing there may be a tight turnaround for travel should players be selected for the imminent U20 Concacaf Qualifiers during the summer. We took the initiative a step further and informed the players’ Directors of Coaching for affiliated schools and clubs notifying them that players will be participating in this event. Our event was a sure success, and received lots of positive feedback, commenting on our organization and professionalism, as well as the added convenience of getting the passport process started for players and their families. After the Combine, we participated in a few online meetings with key people under the TTFA banner, to capture not just the lessons learned but also to establish a structured and holistic plan going forward. The takeaway is that this is just the beginning of some wonderful and promising things for us here in not just Broward County, but especially the South Florida region. #TTFAFlorida is here for the long haul. #BeAPart

We wish Jaden Chan Tack the very best in this important stage of his professional journey!

A native of Florida, Chan Tack has joined the Rapids Academy’s U-17 squad from his former club South Florida SA.
“The dynamic, left footed full back is known for his dangerous crosses and set piece attacks and brings with him a punch of defensive energy.”
Chan Tack has previous national team experience as he spent a couple weeks with the Trinidad and Tobago’s U-17 team at training camp in December 2022, as they continued their preparation for the Concacaf U-17 Men’s Championship.

Jaden Chan Tack was also a U15 standout with the TTFA’s coaches during South Florida’s successful Combine held in Broward county (April 2022).

TTFA HEAD COACH SCREENS HOME & US-BASED U-17 PLAYERS

We continue to support the U17 players who attended our South Florida Combine in April, and were subsequently contacted with an invitation to attend sessions in Trinidad.
This preparation is underway for next February’s CONCACAF Men’s U-17 Championship in Guatemala.

Head Coach Shawn Cooper is the one currently overseeing sessions with the Provisional Training Squad of Under 17 home-based and US-based players.

Sessions have been taking place weekly with Cooper and his staff observing scrimmages as they strive towards trimming the squad to 35 players.

Our committee here in Ft. Lauderdale will remain instrumental in continued exercises to leverage US-based players as potential additions to the squads in Trinidad & Tobago.
The inaugural event we held a couple weeks ago in Broward county was a sure success, and plans are already in the works to host additional events/tryouts in the near future.

We have secured a growing database of players from our event, and encourage any other players who were unable to attend the April event, to contact us, so they too will be privy to the upcoming events.

Here is an excerpt from an article posted in a Trinidad & Tobago newspapers yesterday -

"Carrington noted that there were more players for the U-17 category that showed promise in Fort Lauderdale and they will continue to be monitored.
T&T prepares for Group F action alongside Mexico, Haiti and Suriname. The top three teams in the group advance to the round of 16, where they will be joined by the four teams advancing from the 2021 CONCACAF U-20 Championship qualifying.
Unlike the previous editions, the competition will determine not only the four CONCACAF representatives at the 2023 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Indonesia but also the two CONCACAF representatives at the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Assistant coach Reynold Carrington has described the recent Player Combines that were staged in Washington DC and Fort Lauderdale, USA as “beneficial” towards the Under-20 Men’s Team programme ahead of the 2022 CONCACAF U-20 Men’s Championship."

“This was definitely a beneficial exercise. The main purpose of this exercise was for us the coaches to get a clearer idea of the level of players based in the United States and Canada. We constantly hear or read about the guys out there but unless they are playing in the top-level leagues, it is sometimes difficult to keep tabs on them. Now with the help of the talent identification teams and the groups in places such as DC and Florida we have a better chance to scout and have a better look at the players,” Carrington explained.

We're thankful and privileged to have been sanctioned by the Trinidad & Tobago Football Association to host a Combine right here in Broward county, Florida last week. It was our pleasure to have Coach Reynold Carrington and Major Basil Thompson engaged in our 2-day event which drew over 30 talented players. We look forward to this being an ongoing collaboration.
Our committee comprises of US-based Coaches Anis Jerbi and Jason Ford, in addition to management staff Lesley-Ann Chan Tack and Nisha Corbie.
